Re: We Need Some New Dimmers Installed
Yeah, but read down a couple sentenced below that. 320.30(D)(1) permits it to be fished in concealed spaces where supporting is impractical, as Mag has done in this photo. This permission is pretty much universal for most wiring methods, in that you can fish in most cables without having to suppport them. Can you imagine a requirement that made it necessary to tear apart walls and ceilings just to put on a clip or staple? That would be crazy.

Re: We Need Some New Dimmers Installed
There's probably a few that you can't. The common stuff you'd rewire a building with like romex, FMC (greenfield), MC, and AC (BX) you can. I never really looked at the more obscure stuff to check on everything.
EDIT... I just did a quick search for "fished" and you can add type MI cable, LFMC (sealtite) and EMT (in unbroken lengths, no couplings) to that list. I must admit that I'm surprised to see type MI cable on that list, since it's used for super-critical life safety circuits. I'd have thought they'd want that done really good. Re: We Need Some New Dimmers Installed
The top of the boxes should have some better support. However, the wall on the opposite side of this one is of 1/2" plywood, 5/8" sheetrock, and some fancy stainless steel for the kitchen walls. Although you do not see these screws in the picture, they were added before the dimmers went in and after I took the picture you see, along with bonding screws to accommodate the ground tails on the Leviton dimmers. The sixth dimmer was added for another row of hi-hats.
Stick, you're 100% right about securing those cables with 12" of the j-boxes. I have to do that next time I am there. Good catch. Here are some of those lights... ![]() here is an idea of what was up there before...

Re: We Need Some New Dimmers Installed
Too many can lights! It's unneccesary & waste of power (electric bill$)... and too many dimmer controls.

Re: We Need Some New Dimmers Installed
My rule of thumb for can placement is, no more then 1/2 the ceiling height apart. Ie 8' ceiling = no father then 4' apart etc.
This is just my two cents. However with this said his placement looks great to me if that is a 8' ceiling. Nice to see quality installations replacing crap work!!!! |

Re: We Need Some New Dimmers Installed
Too much light is easily adjusted for. Too little light is a unhealthy!
I see a well planned set-up configuration. Why the offset on the cans closest to the top of the picture????

Re: We Need Some New Dimmers Installed
Rafter was in the way. That was the only area that gave me a problem as far as the layout goes. the other problem was the pitch of the roof. In the picture above, the lights all the way in the back are non-insulated ceiling cans. by the time I got to the other side of the room, the pitch of the roof forced me to go with insulated cans to account for the insulation. There's a total of something like 28 cans in all. 75 watts each.
