Re: Service Entrance Size
It looks like at least #4CU. Why do you ask if it is #3?

Re: Service Entrance Size
I remember when I spoke to the 'electrician' who did the service upgrade he said it was a #6.
I was reading the local code book stating it needs #3 for 100A. Just wanted a second opinion. The ground is the other end of what was in this picture.. So you can understand my concerns. http://www.contractortalk.com/f32/old-house-fixed-ground-16354/ |

Re: Service Entrance Size
That's old TW wire. That would be 60° wire.

Re: Service Entrance Size
It looks like it could be #3 to me, but if it's TW that's only good for 85 amps.
And if it's part of a multi-wire assembly you'll have to read the sheathing, there's likely nothing written on the wire |

Re: Service Entrance Size
The ground wire is probably 6 wire.
My bet is that it is 2s. Nobody around here ever even STOCKED 3 guage. ... but the real question is ... why is the panel mounted sideways? If the service panel was worth changing, why not the entrance cable? ....or is this a subpanel? ... then why is the neutral bar bonded to the enclosure? Is that a cable connector or the end of a steel conduit [parallel conductor]? [that looks like a bushing and I don't remember ever seeing a black insulated ground in a cable ...] ... or don't the laws of physics apply north of the border?

Re: Service Entrance Size
Its a Main entrance not a sub-panel .Ground wire pluse bounding screw. And the reason why they put the panel in sleeping mode , its cause all the mains werent long enough so they put it sideways. Ive done it a few time no choice.

Re: Service Entrance Size
regid lock-nut with a reducer, broke one knock-out too many.
But in quebec, when u change a panel on an old service like this usualy the lock-nut has a ground lug on it, and its required to put it back. |

Re: Service Entrance Size
They look like #3 copper to me, he missed the ground bushing on the service raceway BIG no-no as per the OESC. Looks like you have some old flat rate hot-water conductors in there too. wasn't any of this inspected??? Looks shady to me!
