Service Entrance Change

Called out on a service call on a rental because the tenants were hearing a arcing sound on windy days and found this old service. Told the owner he needed a new service installed.

Very nice looking in the after pics.
What size was the inside panel? Looks like the house is being fed through a 3/4"?

Re: Service Entrance Change

The inside panel is 30 Amps with the screw in fuses. The landlord didn't want to change it out at this time.

Looks like a nice job, with the exception of the fact that you used a capped ell. Blech!

Yeah. I very, very rarely ever need one of those. I think I only use them for going around an outside corner.

'Round here we call 'em jakes. Homeowners like them so they don't need a pipe bender.

Re: Service Entrance Change

Looks good to me. Without the uni-strut how are you suppose to clamp down the riser? That's why they invented paint.

Question I have. I see the old panel was surface mounded and you just moved your new panel over and ran a pipe to the sub-panel inside. I just looked at one today, an old tiny 60 A Zinco combo panel recessed in the wall. Its on a garage wall with access to the back from inside the garage. Small house, 6 or 7 circuits. What I have seen done is someone took the face off the old panel and then surface mounted right over the old panel.

I was thinking of doing this, avoids ripping out the old panel, patching stucco etc. But the old panel sticks out about 1/4" past the wall And then there is the issue of the old wires are too short. I know I can put a j-box below it in the wall and then pipe into the new panel. If there wasn't access to the inside of the all I would have to break into it, this kinda defeats the purpose.

Has anyone done installed a panel this way? And how did you do it?

You're best off ripping out that old panel and bringing your home runs into a jbox and reroute them into the new service. Ought to be an easy job really. Don't forget to derate those conductors for the branch circuits and your AFCI circuit breakers for the required circuits. Good luck

Yea, thats how I'm quoting it. One of these days I need to take a closer look at the ones I've seen. On a recent change out job the inspector told me he had one where the guy put the new panel over the old box, Used the old box it as a j-box, but then all the spices were hidden. The guy had to tare it out and recess it. Maybe these are done by hacks?
