You are in the wrong forum but..........

It depends on the installation.

I have seen some stuff from the early 60's that was seriously stuck on and MAY have contained asbestos. It was a BEAR to scrape and float smooth.

The stuff from the 70's generally scrapes off in a matter of minutes. It onlt bonds well at the seams.

I bought a house that had plaster ceilings and someone had sprayed the textuture over them. It didn't stick at ALL and the plaster was back to stock very quickly.

How does that change the fact that this is the electrical forum?

At least post a pic of the ceiling, so we can tell you how much.

I see nothing in either post that suggests this.
Maybe your crystal ball can tell us more?

You'll get much better advise in the "Plumbers Forum"

Call the fire department. Maybe they could use your situation for a training demo for the rookies.

They like tearing down things to get to a fire.
