1. Romex sheath is to terminate INSIDE the box

Correct, at least 1/4" of sheating needs to be in the box.
(Help! Not sure what code section this one falls under)

2. Wire "nail strips" are plumbing hangers

Nothing wrong with notching beams as long as it doesn't interfere with the integritiy of the structure.
300.4 (A)(2)

3. Should have drilled in the center of the studs to run the wire anyway

If holes are drilled, an 1 1/4" space from the edge of the stud must be maintained. If not, use a nail plate.
300.4 (A)(1)

4. Runs generally look like crap, and should be WAY straighter and tidy

Correct, "workmanlike manner" is reason for a job to not meet code requirements.

Im not sure where the disconnect was for this beast.

I do know, however, that it's not energized.

Nothing like resurrecting a 2-year old thread.

The homemade hot water heater is awesome. For some reason the guy only had certain materials available and made good. I hope it's not a jail, cause that guy could probably make something dangerous with those cleaning supplies.

Check out his website now http://markbeiser.com/Site/Home-1.html

It says "you're not finished learning until you're dead". Maybe his wiring caught his house on fire.

Only pros keep the stripped wires in the box. I'm no electrician but know enough to call when when needed.
