Interesting Installation Of A Recessed Light.

The bottom line is recessed luminaries (fixtures) are not permitted to be installed in a pull-down stairwell! The requirements for installation can be found in the NEC in Article 410, Part XI [Special Provisions for Flush and Recessed Luminaries (Fixtures)]. As per 410.64, luminaries (fixtures) installed in recessed cavities in walls or ceilings shall comply with 410.65 through 410.72.

This photo was submitted by Joseph Hagarty of HouseMaster, Main Line, Pa.

Comments appreciated.

PS: Does this site have any specific location for the NEC as it relates to the "Use and Understanding" of the Code?

PSS: I received Private messages but cannot return a reply until I post 20 messages, that's a good way to get people to participate.

If that picture wasn't so sad, it would be hillarious.

No, there's no specific place here do discuss NEC issues. It sort of gets mixed in with electrical contractor business issues in the Electrical forum area. There is a seperate area for the low voltage guys, but nothing NEC specific. Truthfully, there's nobody that is a regular part of the forum here that can be the voice of authority on NEC matters. There are many licensed men here, and we can give our interpretations and offer what we know to be true, but can't say with authority the way so many fellas on Holt's site can. It would seem redundant to do that here.

Joe, long ago you somehow became the guy to send electrical code violation pictures to. How many do you think you get a week? I notice that pic's from PA, where we just came onboard with statewide codes in AUG of '04. The NEC was previously enforced in many municipalities for years, but not all. Since I work in PA, I could take pictures of goofy code violations at least 2-3 times a week. Makes working here interesting.

Say, keep up the good work Joe!

Re: Interesting Installation Of A Recessed Light.

Perhaps that's not a pull down stairway at all. Maybe it's part of the adjustment feature to aim the fixture?

Nah... I hope it wasn't a real electrician installed that. If a real electrician installed that, he would have made sure that the NM cable went under all the rungs, at least.

This is one of those funny things that really doesn't get done on a regular basis (I hope). I don't suspect anyone else will ever run into a recessed can in a pull down stairway. I havn't heard of this being an ongoing problem. On the other hand, you do want to make sufficient fun of an installation like this so that it doesn't start becoming common practice.

md, it couldn't have been the HO. He would have used an extension cord left over from Christmas.

Rob, most likely the photo was hotlinked from a different source, and has since been moved, or taken down. Seeing that the thread was started back in Sept.
