Grow lights

I just finished up a job today for a coral growing operation.

I had intentions of taking pics of all the work including transfer switch/sub for emergency power and the contactors for the 14 circuits......but it was 5PM by the time I wrapped up and I only grabbed a couple pics.

4, 16' fiberglass tanks with a heat pump for water temp, 7 circulating pumps and 12, 1000 watt and 12, 400 watt metal halide fixtures (fbo) hanging 3' above the water.

All the ballasts are 120v cord and plug. Outlets are installed on top of the unistrit racks. The cords look messy but...oh well. Customer wanted to be able to move/replace them.

Growing coral in Phoenix?

Makes no sense at all. The light is not as much of an issue as the need for a constant supply of fresh sea water.

Because the light is substantially filtered by the water, and because growing in tubs allows much less water above the corals, using a standard greenhouse for light would be more than adequate.

Adding the salts to convert large quantities of fresh water into sea water in the middle of a dessert seems to be a real stretch.

some of these:

would have helped the cord situation.

Looks nice when you use them to attach the cords to the drop chains as well.

So, any idea what you feed a pet coral?

They aren't much for tricks but they don;t leave little piles of stuff all over the carpet like the dog does.

Coming from one of the "greenest " states in the Union, I see that setup and think Adam Sandler said it best...

Sorry dude, I'm "sure" it's for a legitimate coral growing operation, but all I can say is, track your energy usage with those high-powered lights and be able to sufficiently explain it to the authorities!

Mac

WELL CRAP. It's a lot funnier hearing him say "You can put your weed in there" than looking at these lines of code. I dunno what's goin' on...it worked when I previewed my post but not since then...

He was told by other growers to expect visits from the police because the routinly patrol by helicopter looking for these kind of things. This place is way too open and high profile for an illegitimate operation.

That reminds me of an episode of Weeds where Doug (kevin Nealon) steals the cross and then puts it in his Grow-House. The feds see an image of an illuminated cross through the roof via FLIR. The rest is too funny to go in to.

One of the best shows on TV.

Never seen it????? Here is a "taste".
