Fun little gem

This looks like fun!
Found it today installing an ISE push activated disposer setup.
I gave my price to them for the repair which includes changing it to an old work dual gang if I can get that box out without too much damage. If it gets jacked up, I'll put in a single gang box. Fun Fun

Besides the cutout being too large, and the use of sheetrock screws to attach both devices, what are the other issues here? A 2-gang box extender is also needed to make up for that space between the front of the box and the finished surface.

I would use paint mixing sticks and secure them with coarse screws above and below the box. Add some Plaster of Paris to fill in the difference, install the 2-gang box extender, and be done with it.

I forgot to mention the box is not nailed in. The wall was furred out like 2" which is why there is such a large gap. I was thinking box extender until I realized it is just hanging by the wires. Just gonna start over and do it correctly!

Is there a stud on either side?

If yes, that'd be a perfect place for a smart box.

I thought of you today Celtic. I was rebuilding a tankless water heater and the little old lady has this sliding rack that fit into her oven. She said she spilled apple pie and took it out to clean and couldn't get it back in. Long story short, the filling froze up the ball bearing slider on one side. Whatever, got it clean enough to slide again, got it back in for her. She was so happy, far more happy than getting her hot water after a week. She tells me, here let me warm you up some fresh apple pie. Instantly you poped into my mind as I'm telling her no, no thanks. Well seeing as I hate ALL pies except for apple. It is my weakness and I concieded. I felt like a professional pie taster for a bried moment today. Your disease is spreading across the country, it's gonna turn us all into fat a$$es!!

If you ever find yourself needing to use a jumbo-sized cover plate, you're actually covering up a code violation. The wall must be finished within a certain dimension of the box.

I guess that's the "certain dimension".

Maggie sounded quite 'certain' of it.
