What Happened Here

I walked across the street to see how the "competition" stacked up. I feel sorry for them. What a pain to cut/install a beam that is too short. Then again, maybe the plan called for the beam to sit on a temp post rather than in the wall...I don't know. More Pics here.

I don't like that there is a butt joint of some other beams above the end of this cut beam. Maybe I'm not seeing this right. Its not like its holding up most of the second floor over the garage............uh...........never mind.

How about the far beam in the bottom pic. It appears to be resting on top of the door header.

Re: What Happened Here

You can see pic. 2 I think it was meant to go more to the left and into a pocket there..Must have a great project manager on this one!!!!!!

Hurry get it covered before the inspector gets here...LOL unless they are like the inspectors here in detroit and do just a drive by ..then it will be ok. just means more jobs for us remodeling contractors down the road and it drops.. job security!!!

Re: What Happened Here

Pic 2... i'd bet that the estimator ordered the microlam too short, and the framers would just say "hey, that's what you sent us, so we put it in!"

The last pic... that's just scary. One would think the framers would get to that point and let someone know the sawcut for the door was in the wrong place.

In the second pic, what are they using the chunk of osb on the side of the beam for? Please tell me they aren't using it to plate together chunks of beam material....

Now I remember why I enjoyed working for homebuilders... always good stories and pictures.

only makes you look better. I'd like to hear how this ends. Putting that beam in there is gonna cost them.

Re: What Happened Here

At this stage in the game the best idea would be to temp it up 2' back. Pull the existing temp and cut a pad in and set a steel post. Then frame around and drywall. No one would know.

The other beam resting on the header would be ok... If the header was twice its size and it had 3-4 more trimmers. Somone is a moron on this house.

Re: What Happened Here

I worked today, SAT. I took more pix. Maybe this link will work.

I think they are hammering out the garage slab and pouring a footing. It just seems kinda small. For all those joists hanging on that beam...it needs to be looked at by guys who calc loads and have those cool circular little red stamps.

Re: What Happened Here

Just looked over the other pics in that album...

Ho. Lee. Crap. That's a bad job.

Looks like "Gudenuf" and "Can't see it from my house" have been in there framing away...

Good stuff to show prospective clients who NOT to hire!!

Re: What Happened Here

I was just wondering. Now would be the time for them to temp brace everything, and, cut that beam out and install a new one.

I think its "do-able". Anyone else with me?

No way

No idea

No problem

Who cares...not my problem
