More Steel Going Up

Here is the latest building project we are currently on. This is a 50 wide X 100 long X 18 high engineered trussed steel building. It is on the grounds of the Major County Historical Society grounds and will house antique tractors and equipment when completed. Our deadline is September 20, and I think we will make it ok. The last 2 pictures were taken today, and the weather was really unusual for this time of year. Matter of fact, about the time I shot the first picture, a tornado was sighted in my home town, Hennessey, and here we were, 50 miles away, in Fairview, Oklahoma. http://www.contractortalk.com/attach...1&d=1156819075

I can't tell you how awesome I think that antique forklift is. That's a beauty.

(I probably wouln't have posted a pic of my man standing on the rail of the scissors lift, though, even if we all do it all the time.)

Re: More Steel Going Up

1964 Lull 7C Highlift....bought on E bay for $2700...nearly $1300 to get it here...but that has been a few years back. Now you guys know how cheap I am...and my forklift isn't the oldest piece I have...1957 530 Case backhoe...before they called them construction kings even.

We used to rent forklifts and scissor lifts, but it finally dawned on me to own this stuff, and quit paying rent. Sometimes the lifts set for a few months, occasionally I will take the forklift out on a hire job, I never rent my scissor lift or lift bed truck for liability reasons, but like now, none of this equipment will see the yard for 4 months....yep, renting is a bad deal.

HEY!!! I have a 530. They called them "old clanky". I'll have to get some pics of mine. Scary bastard. No ROPS or FOPS. You know, they still have new old stock parts for them in Case's Chicago parts house. Good for me. I have a more modern 580 also.

I'll show you mine if you show me yours! I looked and no picture in my files, so I will shoot one tomorrow....I would never sell the old girl, I'll let her retire on my mini farm. Since we have backed away from doing in-ground storm cellars, I cannot justify buying a 580, as much as I want one...but who knows...there is the lottery!

Re: More Steel Going Up

Here is my classic backhoe...ain't she purty!http://www.contractortalk.com/attach...1&d=1156892245I thought I would add don't laugh, she is very paid for! Now, for you guys who would be ashamed, it weighs #9000, runs on gas, so it will start everytime, is very loose, no one ever wants to borrow her, and the power is almost as good as an early 580. I have dug a bunch of storm cellars and septic tanks with the old beast, and now it does a lot of demo work......

Re: More Steel Going Up

Here are a few more from the end of the week...the building in now ready for purlin and girts, then sheeting. I have 3 very serious quotes from drive bys, and lots of interest. Whili I love to build new homes, the satisfaction here is the construction time is quick, and pays well......http://www.contractortalk.com/attach...1&d=1157310033

Re: More Steel Going Up

I think you are simply jealous old buddy! You couldn't have a sweet looking backhoe like mine if you went out and looked for one.

Since I don't solicit backhoe work, the appearance doesn't bother me a lot. If we still were doing a lot of storm cellars, I might have upgraded, except for the weight....#9000 pulls a lot easier then #13000, but insurance and workload dictated we leave that behind, unless we are doing one as part of a larger project. Since I have been so pumped on ICF's, I think I will try to see the above ground safe room instead of digging a cellar and sweating the pour, hoping it doesn't leak when it is finished. So the backhoe works only on my personal projects now....except when I have to.

Re: More Steel Going Up

I am putting one of these up right now. I shall be blowing the snow off the steel in the morn.

Does your manufacturer recommend putting All of the truss systems up first w/out purlins? Did you brace it up?

We have the center ones squared purlined, cabled, and straight, now ( Tomorrow) we are putting the outer sections together.

Assembly time is great on the man hours. I did a 32 bay steel storage facility for the same manufacturer. This is our first big steel build, since the storage was only 8' wall, this one is 16' wall.

We were held out the past 4 days for my column brackets not being shipped with the package, you cant really just stop by the lumberyard for one. I shall post some pics.
Like a puzzle box.
Did this one come with insulation blankets?

Re: More Steel Going Up

This is a weld up frame, and just like big house trusses, 2 are placed and braced. Only the roof was insulated on this one. if you search my posts, you can see a red iron erection, same deal. Once you have 1 bay up, you brace and square, and then run out.

Re: More Steel Going Up

We got all our walls up, missing 3 girders. What a pain in the ass. I was going to sheet the two walls that aren't missing girts. What do you think? (the girts are two for a bay, and one on 3 bays is missing)
Will I want to kill myself for doing it?

We have all our purlins and everything was PREDRILLED. So naturally I spent about 16 man hours today drilling out what some pothead in a shop in Colorado forgot.

Re: More Steel Going Up

Missing steel components.....every job, something will be screwed up....I would not sheet walls with the intention of adding the girts in after the sheets are up....we roofed the building in my post on red iron without having the walls completely sheeted since insulation wasn't present in the quantity it was supposed to be, and it is a pain, but you just have to work around the stuff sometimes.

Re: More Steel Going Up

Not to hijack this thread, but we finished the insulation and sheeting today. WOW> what a SOB. Same story with us, One to many rolls of the wall insul. and not enough of the roof. We are making it happen though. Truly a trying experience. 1' of mud all around. 2 Bobcats stuck. All of the bracing is drilled wrong. Called the manuf. they said "well it happens."

Got the call today to install another door. WOW> dreading tomorrow. At least I can vent here.

Re: More Steel Going Up

Welcome to the world of red iron erection! If that is the worst thing that happens, you will be lucky.....I ran over a door jamb trim with the scissor lift....me, not one of my guys....and they busted out laughing...another delay..tomorrow, I install the OHD's...1 is 24 feet wide by 16 high, the other 2 are 14 by 14's.....it will be a long day.

Re: More Steel Going Up

There are so many of those in the county i live in i couldn't count them all. I call them farmers sheds. Because there where all the farmers keep there tractors. But now your seeing people buying a piece of land in the country and building a new home. The will build a smaller version of one of those off the house to use as a garage for there cars and stuff. I like the white truck with the scissor lift bed. I bet there are gc's here who wished they had one to lift building materials up in the air.
