A Journeyman Carpenter's Hobby

geocities.com/outdoorsmanlogcabins

Give me some feed back on my hobby. I've been building with logs, timbers, and cants for the past 7 years on and off.

A few years ago I purchased a elemantry version portable Saw Mill. It's capable to making 48" cants.

I'm a Union Carpenter full time and make some of these Cabins on the Side.

It looks like a rewarding hobby. Do you have a way to calculate the load and capacity of the structure for permits? The last Post and Beam I saw in Massachusetts was almost not allowed to be built, he had to hire an engineer to show the calculations before he could get a permit.

Nice looking structures.

How do you deal with shrinkage of the timbers? Are they pre-seasoned? I built one log home with full log gables and had to leave a gap at the top of the roof, (with a temporary roof over it) so that when the logs shrank and the pitch of the roof lowered as they did, the two roof planes came together.

Stairs are another issue in log buildings as they shrink over time, how do you deal with that?
