Re: Deck Works

Beautiful boards, is that cedar or what? If it is cedar what price is it going at up there. My understanding is that there is only one lumber yard on the sushine coast, do you bring in your supplies from Van? Most people just don't know how beautiful it is up there. Wish it was me.

Re: Deck Works

There are four yards that I know of on the coast. It's cedar...inside deal, nothing to do with me...generally prices are about $2.50/ft, depending on finish etc. A few guys sell it out of their yard...mini mills.
Had a peek at your site...interesting. Tough sell with lumber prices being so low....great concept though. I've surely been dosed quite well with ACQ...

Re: Deck Works

actually that was not why I was asking but thanks anyway. We are always being asked how it compares in price to cedar, so is always nice to know what prices are.

My understanding is that you need to be able to work in the rain in most of the Lower Mainland.

Liquid sunshine is good for the soul.

Re: Deck Works

Ha, now it's spring...when we get a nice day here, like today, it is indeed a glorious day, but when a pacific front drags through, its like cold wet cotton....BTW- nice site you have...I'd get one up, but summer is approaching, and I'm toast. Like those wooden belly ballusters you put up...I don't get to do much custom work around here...summer cottages = bottom dollar jobs.

What kind of critters? These folks love thier shotguns....problem solved...LOL
A skirt? Yeah, probably some cedar lattice...I'd be partial to cultured stone myself or a combo of the two. All I know is that I'm out of the picture after I finish the deck (fascia on up)...I'm retiring for the summer...
Too much deck for little old me.

Hey, if you or anybody have any ideas, I'd be happy to pass it onto them.

What type of fasteners did you use?

Looks great by the way. No railing I guess?

Thanks!

SS 3-1/2" deck screws....after putting just enough deck boards on, I realized I should've lobbied the owners for a hidden system. I still have about 1500 to do, maybe more....

Railing is to come....2ft rule here (Less than 2ft, owners choice; 2ft-6ft, 36" min railing; 6ft+, 42" min railing)
Glass on front, pickets (ballusters) on side....hey, if anyone has unique picket pics, please post link here...thx. I'm always up for something different...thinking maybe they could be interested with a little pizzaz...this is what I said i would do...identical to stair pickets...

Re: Deck Works

2 x 2 pickets are boring.
spice it up by alternating 2 x 2's, 2 x 4's, 2 x 6's. use combinations like 2 2 x 2's followed by a 2 x 4 single, then more 2 x 2's, repeat as required.

Re: Deck Works

I love the lines of this. It's a reference given to me from a client I am quoting a job for. I know it's a porch and it's painted, but the lines and proportion are beautiful.
