Deck Works

In the grand scheme of things, this deck is straightforward, except it took a while to straighten out the comedy...short story: original deck idea was to be 13ft off front of house, but after much useless legwork (plans/material lists etc.), it turns out cottage is 5ft off property line, and code around here states any structure attached to house must be 5ft off property line...oops. So, there is a code workaround...if deck is not physically attached to house, then deck can go right to property line, provided it isn't more than two feet off ground...
After screwing around for six months, the deck expands to 1000sqft (wraparound) and 21 footings. Below is before, excavating, footing work, concrete...more to come.

Re: Deck Works

You'll note some of the columns are square and others using sonotubes...it is wet here, and the shorter columns are easier using wood and I don't have to worry about them getting wet...plus, nobody will see the square columns...the large pad is for future hot tub...

Re: Deck Works

Thanks for the words...the beams have been installed...onto the joists...usually a relaxing aspect of a deck job, but since this deck wraps around three corners and numerous nooks (and framing a hottub), it is going to be a pain. I discovered a quick and easy way to lay joists, should you be interested (works best on rectangular/square decks). I cut up a wack of blocking on my mitre saw using end cuts of beams and WHY. Given they are all perfectly the same, I use them to measure...no longer do any measuring when laying out joists...makes for mindless entertainment and production is blazingly fast. Also, I've noticed blocking over beams reduces twang on deck...not to mention the blueskin I put on the beams (physically barrier mostly from crud cooking on top of the beams).

Re: Deck Works

Slowly getting the joists done...the back corner was a headache trying to get balance as I turned the corner, and maintain good spacing for the railing....a little overkill on the blocking, but I've never had anyone complain after-the-fact. Cheers, Melli

Re: Deck Works

What type of material is it you're covering the beams with?

Re: Deck Works

Blueskin..used for window/door sills and WHY. I used to use 6mil vapour barrier, but for the price blueskin isn't out of line. The sole purpose is to protect the top of the beam from becoming a soup kitchen. And there is the vibration damping effect too...

Re: Deck Works

It's a summer cottage (800sqft., 1-1/2 level, 2bed, 2 bath)...small, but very tall, as I own one down the road. Deck is a little bigger than sqft of cottage....

Re: Deck Works

Curious w/ your double rim joist and fascia, how do you attach your handrail posts? outside of fascia?

(Like seeing the blueskin on the beam tops - good protection.)

Re: Deck Works

Outside of fascia. I use 5/8" carriage bolts 8" long right through the works (rim joist and fascia)...I've found 5/8" bolts don't flex like 1/2" bolts. I also use a big honkin washer on the bolt to spread out the point stress...I've posted a few pics of this on other threads. Hmm, gave me a thought about installing posts on the inside..would lose a little deck space in the process and be a pain to work the deck boards around the post...clean look though. I think I've seen your work like that...or was it Al posts...
Thanks, cheers.
