The obvious answer is a movie set. I don't know the last film to be done in Venice. There was a recent one where they were stealing some gold or something, lots of speed boats involved. As slow as movies are being released, maybe it hasn't been released yet.

I was a propmaker for about a year here when work slowed down. I have tons of pictures from "The Year One". As soon as the movie hits theaters I will post some up.

Yea it's a movie set it may look like some town in Italy but we built it in Southern Luxembourg at a place called Esch sur Alzette, originally just for one movie (Secret passage). The set was built in 2001 but it wasn't pulled down till 06 or 07.
I believe quite a few movies were filmed there,T.V. series and commercials.
When you think that the whole thing was built out of timber, green plaster board and plaster of Paris and was in the open for so long it must have been rotten when they eventually pulled it down.
The sheer size of the set was mind blowing, each building was built on a plateau and had a concrete wall poured around the base the spaces between the plateaus where tar mac'd out and water from a reservoir pumped in to form the canals.Nothing you can see in the pic's is real in the first pic you can see where dust from the plaster flags has been transfered onto the red paver's,the moss on the side of the canals is saw dust mixed with green paint and thrown onto the side.
Watching the plaster's was fascinating they would make there own molds and sprinkle it with sawdust so when the piece was taken out of the mold it would look pitted and old before the painter's could paint it and make it look even older.
Any way I found the whole thing fascinating.
