Two-level Cedar Deck With Pergola Perimeter

Hey guys! If you can't tell yet, I am very excited!

We are starting a two-level cedar deck, approximately 16x21 lower level and 6x15 upper level.

I went to present the proposal and a sketch-up of what I thought they wanted and they were pretty much like "great! When can you start?"

Re: Two-level Cedar Deck With Pergola Perimeter

There are a few discrepencies in the sketch-up, it was mostly to put some form to our ideas.

  • The Pergola-thing will go around most of the perimiter of the lower deck
  • Railings on the stairs
  • Post caps
  • The railings will be all cedar (probably 2x2 vertical ballusters or however you spell that).
  • Probably will be square lattice skirting (that is my preference, anyway)

Expect before, progress, and after shots soon!

Nice presentation!

A good picture can really assist in helping a HO understand what they're planning.

Well, we had a freak cold snap and snowstorm.

Isn't that great that it happened the day we had to pour the footings?

For those who don't know, we usually get 1-2 days of snow randomly in winter. It usually rains all winter.

Way to work through the weather, man!

One question, does the 6x15 upper level connect in w/ the existing porch/staircase somehow? Is it 15' between the white column and the edge of the window? Jus' trying to visualize it built!

Are you going to prestain any of the cedar components? Might be a good upsell that would give you some shop time if you get hit w/ another snowstorm...

We're taking off the decking of the current one that is about 4x15 (you were right), and making it 6x15 as shown in the drawing They want to be able to have their BBQ up there, but right now it doesn't really have the space.

That is actually a very good idea about prestaining! There is supposed to be more snow tomorrow.

F THAT! You wouldn't find me out in that crap, NO WAY!

It was 81 degrees here yesterday, a little chilly for my taste .

How do you concentrate on what your doing? With the cold, and snow constantly covering up what your working on it seems to be an almost impossible task.

Well, it's not as bad as you may think. Snow doesn't come down as fast as rain. And once you trample around in it a bit, it's no big deal. It's better than rain in some ways, other than the coldness factor. We didn't work yesterday because it was supposed to be a lot of snow. Didn't snow at all and it was bright and sunny (still cold though).

Working today a little with back-filling and fiddling around, even though it is freezing outside. The lumber was supposed to be delivered Wednesday, but it is only being delivered today.

Beautiful deck can't wait to see it built. Did your concrete set okay in the cold?

The deck is going to take more than half of their back lawn

Yeah, it wasn't as cold during the day, and we didn't do any work yesterday. Also, I was supplied with "Winter Concrete" by the concrete guys. I don't really know what the difference is other than they use hot water and it's a little more expensive.

I am pretty new at sketchup, how do you remove the axis lines and replace them with the green ground covering like you have done.

Sorry for getting your thead off subject but I have been trying to figure that out for a while.

Under Window -> Styles
I am not the best either, so I have to play around once I get in there until I figure it out.

The concrete company adds calcium to the mix. Up to 2% and the stuff will get hard REAL fast.....

Well, no chance of any prestaining the lumber. It has all been delivered on site. I'd still like to finish the job before Christmas, but that's not really going to happen, especially since the weather is not looking like it's going to clear up in the next few days. I will keep that in mind for future projects though, it is a great idea.
