Some picts of mantels from days gone by

These were taken from 2000 to 2002 when I was still ran trim everyday.

An oak one copied from a picture the builder had. It was suppose to be from some place in Boston from the late 1800s.
There was a mirror that was going to be put in the center.
Fluting the curved corbels was a bitch.

Not real happy with this one,......too top heavy. This was from a builders personal house. He was a F'ing crook. He burned a friend of mine for 90 grand!

I tried a different way to make legs on this one ,got tired of straight and square.I cocked them out at 30 degrees. (Picts kinda suck but....)

Another one I wasnt too sure about, but I had limited space between the doors. The routed 1x corbels on this one were too either wide across or the 1x was too thin. Something about it I didnt like.
I did want to use the angled face with the 30 degree legs at one time but never got around to it.

Those are some nice pcs. Out of the ones you showed I liked the 1st. I got a few of them myself.

Very cool stuff!! Thats the one thing I miss about trim, the detailed things you can do to an otherwise ordinary window or door.. or fire box.

BTW,Did you make this profile?

that's the key in that surround. Yes, I made it. Mostly router work. Some bandsaw and spindle sanding. The bottom returns to the marble. Made the parts seperately and then glued them together. I thought it looked cool.
