A Small Study Desk - I am NO furniture maker

Okay,

I can take the heat. I am in NO way a trim carpenter nor a cabinet maker. Those guys are in a class all their own. My mind is simple and my focus is on structure. So, let the comments rip.

Without further delay...here is a simple table my wife wanted to use as an education center when she starts home schooling our boy. She said "simple"...I heard "structural work bench". This is my 14FEB09 gift to her and my boy.

Specs: 1 sheet A/C 3/4" plywood; 6 SPF 2x4-8'; screws and glue.

PS. You'll see I designed it thinking I would find four edged 2x4s at the lumber yard...what was I thinking?

It's not pretty, but it should last forever. Strong first attempt, and hopefully you have gotten the woodworking bug.

I told my wife we should laminate some family pictures, lay them out all over the table and then clear coat the whole thing, like on restaurant tables, and create a family heirloom.

I really like working with wood. I think I am bitten. Maybe I will take on some more challenging projects. Oh wait, actually I have to get through the current little structure I'm framing - its a real headache - then I can get back to the fun stuff.

You son and wife will certainly be using that work station till it has All Been Taught!

I like the scrapbook part, but I believe that an area that can be written upon would serve as a better "History Book". If it is going to be "His" table I believe that he should be afforded the opportunity to treat it as such as long as he fully comprehends the notion that this is the ONLY table on which things my be written. Hell, I was given an entire wall to do whatever. It certainly increased my limited Artistic abilities.

Just an idea thinking as an Adult who remembers his Childhood and the oppprtunities I was afforded.

That thing looks sturdier than the platforms we build to elevate the mechanical equip. on the islands. Go with the collage of family pictures, cool idea.

I like Malco's idea. A collection of his own work thru the years, maybe put a piece of glass on until it is full, then seal. What a great "memory table" for his first apartment!

That's a beauty. And I had to chuckle when I saw it, brings back memories.

My dad was more structurally oriented as well. And was constantly building things that looked just like this.

When I was learning to play an instrument, he built me a "music stand" out of scrap 2X and plywood in lieu of a store-bought version.

That thing looked like a scaffold had mated with sawhorses.

We also had an auto-feeder gravity dog food contraption that held a 25lb bag of Purina dog chow and would dispense into a large plastic container at the bottom. Ol' Dad framed that one like a room addition.

Nice work there, that will last generations.

on the table man great job! I like the glass idea with pics of your work.. the family pics would mean too much to me to encase in acrylic.. but that is just me

Cool man!
I'm a fan of the less-polished furniture.
