Scrap wood and boredom

I had some scrap walnut, maple, and some left over cherry, hated to just ditch it,so the obvious thing to do was,......
make a chess board.

(hey, I was just sitting around anyway, waiting for my "special order" doors to come in.)

Wow, that looks great

Awesome piece for the coffee table or something, could strike up some conversations

EDIT: You really got me wanting to make one now. I was looking at a cribbage board a few weeks back and saw how poor quality it was, and I figured Id make one of them, but I really think this would be more fun, and more useful since Ive never even played cribbage before in my life.

I agree, it looks simple but really takes planning and accurate lining up.

I'm starting to figure you are about 100 years old Gus, everyone seems to be young man to you.

He cut the wood up and glued it together. Simple. How hard could it possibly be.

Well....OK. Take 4 strips of each of the two different colors of wood. Cut 3 of each to whatever size you want the squares to be and cut the other two 1/8" wider. Glue them up in alternating colors making the wider boards the 1st and last of the boards. Let dry. Do a rough sanding to get rid of the glue and even things up, probably 80-100 grit. Then cut the glued up board against the grain so you get strips of alternating colors. Make the cuts the same as the smaller strips. Then glue these together, spinning each alternate pc to get the checker board effect. Being especially careful to keep the squares aligned. After this is dry sand off the glue and flatten it down. Then cut the extra 1/8" off of both sides. Make strips to surround the checkerboard. Miter them to fit and either pin nail or glue them on. Route a decorative edge on the surround. Sand to the desired grit and finish. See, simple.

Actually , I had to cut each square individually (pain in the ass), since I couldnt do it the way I wanted to (not enough walnut),..which was rip and glue long strips, then rip that to the size and flip them.
