Rustic Wood Projects

Here are a couple of pictures of some things that I have done in the last year. The first is a table that I built for a restaurant. It's 12 feet long and about 30 inches wide. The second is an island cabinet that a customer wanted built to his specs. It has a top that is 4 feet by 7 feet to give you and idea of the size.

I think I've seen some other pics of your work on the forum. Very nice work. I'm guessing that's your specialty?? If so, does it work in your favour to specialize in rustic work, and do you take on other typical millwork jobs as well??

Re: Rustic Wood Projects

Theworx, so far it has worked to my favor although I am not above doing what it takes to pay the bills. I have only been in business for myself since last may and the work has not stopped coming. Both of the items above sold for $1200.00 apeice, with about half being material cost. I don't really do any millwork. However I did have a customer who wanted rough sawn trim with a chamfer on the edges so I brought out the router and started making it to his specs.

Re: Rustic Wood Projects

man that looks great. what do you use for a finish?

there's a big difference between your version of rustic and mine. your's=old world feel, looks great. mine=something didn't go together right, and i beat the crap out of it with a hammer.

For the bases I just use a laquer product but for the top it is a two part epoxy called aristocrat liquid glass. It is very tough and not the easiest product to work with.

I spray the laquer with an old diaphram airless. I'm in need of a new sprayer but don't have the money yet. The liquid glass when mixed is as thick as molassas. You pout it out into strips then take a brush and pull the strips together and get it as even as you can then wait. As it dries air bubbles will come to the top and to pop them you take a propane torch and wave it across the finish to pop them. It's not the most user friendly finish but it is very thich and very tough. There's alot more to it but it's hard to explain.

Re: Rustic Wood Projects

Do you have a mill cut the slabs for you? If not, where do you get the raw rustic material?

Re: Rustic Wood Projects

I have a lumber yard that is about 40 miles from my house that sells log siding, large timbers, log handrail parts, 3 inch thick and 4 inch thick live edge slabs. The slabs average about 30 inches wide and there largest beam now is 16 by 16. They told me the other day they are going to start carrying beams that are 24 by 24. The slabs cost $22.00 a running foot.
