Question For The Woodworking (furniture) Guys

I'm getting ready to paint a couple bare wood rocking chairs for my cousin.
Would you suggest I need to fill these nail holes? They will be sitting outside. I really don't want moisture getting in these after I finish painting them. These holes are on the inside, underneath, can't be seen. I will be spraying 2 coats of BIN primer, which will coat/fill these holes, but do you think I need to fill them with putty first? TIA

BTW, these were bought from an 'Amish' furniture store, supposedly hand-made. Since when did the Amish start using a staple gun to slap furniture together?

I would suggest an epoxy. Should hold up forever and be waterproof.

Dave.

I probably won't go get something I don't already have on-site. It will be Elmer's Wood Putty or nothing.

I would fill the holes for sure. Funny thing about your post, a friend of mine named Darin, has a furniture business in Illinois, and he wrote a neat rant on another forum about why he has a website and the Amish furniture makers where he is. Go to full vigor forestry to see it, just a small little getting started forum for wood type guys.

That is funny Jay, dang it now you suckered me in with your e-mail. I was going to make 2 posts here. One to say HI and the last to say BY in plumbing. I tried to post a link, but I don't have enough posts (10), I ain't going to hang around here (or am I?) You have enough stroke post the link. If I keep messing around here I will be able to, man I have other things to do. That was a good rant though What a I even doing here? I am not a plumbing/welding contractor anymore, I am a sawyer/woodworker. Yea in the middle of Amish country, doing it right... what are those brads doing there? "Amish built" by illegal immigrants and kids from Chinese kits... that rant still holds water.

Oh shoot, I didn't leave. I saw a link to Big Daves stuff. Big Dave OBVIOUSLY builds them to last and doesn't spare the wood.

Daren, I just registered over at full vigor but haven't posted yet. I like the site but wasn't sure if I would fit in.

PWG, I use mastic putty for the nail/screw holes on all my exterior projects that are going to be stained a solid colour. It's about $1.50/bag (CDN$) and there's more than enough for your chairs in one bag. It won't shrink and it hold the paint/stain great.

Re: Question For The Woodworking (furniture) Guys

Dave, It is a new thing over there. I got an invite and made a few posts. If it takes off and more people join it may get better. I have it bookmarked and will check back later. I don't fit in here for sure ,I have made 3-4 posts and sure I have already stepped on toes. Too many different guys "jack of all trades' for me. I know there are some masters here, but whatever. I have been there done that. I am done here. I have your site bookmarked so I can draw inspiration (you know what that means, steal) Go back over there and in my profile there is a link to my site. I have a neat thing once and awhile.

Seems like fitting in is what we do when it fits, I think you are qualified Big Dave. I met Daren on another forum where I fit in so well, I was banished, and I really liked it...so you just never know. I hope the Full Vigor Forum takes off, since I love woodworking, and pick up a lot from reading what the masters like Daren do.

Daren, very nice work on your website. Can you get your hands on any basswood?

Also, I saw no phone # on your site. Where in IL are you?

EDIT: Nevermind, I found the contact page.

Re: Question For The Woodworking (furniture) Guys

THe best and cheapest thing I have found for filling exterior woodwork is car body filler. If you get it from one of those car shops that sells CD players and furry seat covers it will cost a fortune but if you go to a trade paint and parts supplier they sell it in big tubs. By contrast, high street buiders merchants sell the same thing, call it wood filler and charge tree times as much for it..
