OOPS Framing - Pictures Of Framing Gone Bad

I was working on a new custom home in Lakeland, TN when I looked over at the neighbor's new home and noticed it had a custom roof line.

I never did get an answer on what happened...we had quite a few theories though.

Re: OOPS Framing - Pictures Of Framing Gone Bad

I'm trying to imagine what happened. Maybe the right side wall of that upstairs room was laid out too far to the right. Which screwed up the tray or cathedral ceiling. The reason I say tray/cathedral ceiling is they could have just continued that roof flare to intersect the main slope if the ceiling were flat. With a full tray or cathedral ceiling they had to build out that tumor.

I don't get it. I can't figure any reason why this would be necessary? Any more opinions. I don't see why the tray would be framed before the rafters started going up either. Looks nice either way.

Re: OOPS Framing - Pictures Of Framing Gone Bad

I would imagine the right upstairs wall was built too far over and rather than moving it after the roof planed right through it, they added the cute little hip roof on it.
Personally I would have held the walls back until I set my rafters and then knee-walled up to them, in doing so eliminating roof bracing and creating my wall for the room.
It's a common mistake, its just ashamed they didn't fix it.

Re: OOPS Framing - Pictures Of Framing Gone Bad

looks like when they flared that bottom part out to a flatter pitch, it got to the end and they went "hmmm, how do we end this?" It would be above the roof to the side exposing the framing on the backside. But then the extra roof there....must've been a "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" day.

Obviously someone messed up and I would say it would be the 1.) architect who drew it and 2.) the framer who didn't foresee the problem beforehand and ask for a revision.

I personally think it was some toe boards on the roof before the roofers got there and they were like ... WTF ... Oh well I guess we will just roll with it.

Re: OOPS Framing - Pictures Of Framing Gone Bad

I took a picture of the house across the street of the two we just framed and sided.

Back when this house was framed, it sat framed to the roof for months on end. I don't know if the framers moved on or what the deal was, but it had something to do with figuring trusses for all those odd angles.

But it looks terrible in the right light. The picture was taken about 11:30am in October.

Hey Tim

You said trusses? I guess the plates must sag or be bowed...from what the "truss experts" say...the trusses come out "true" so I can't figure out why there are those big sags in the roof...is that real tile or a knock off? 24" O.C, plus maybe 7/16" OSB - hmmm.

Wow.

Too bad the builder didn't terminate the contract with the original framers at the point where they couldn't figure out the roof trusses and hire you. This would have been a perfect home for you to stick with 2x12s on 16" centers, and 5/8 T&G Advantech decking.

"No stinking tile would make it sag no how!!!"

I was working on a new custom home in Lakeland, TN when I looked over at the neighbor's new home and noticed it had a custom roof line.

Ya know,It almost seems like the framer built his roof to the framing, without considering the overhang for the brick ledge. If he continued his rafters any farther past the plate at that pitch ,the overhang would cover the top of that window. So he changed the pitch to get an overhang that would cover the brick and not interfere with the window?
It doesn't seem to be done on the rear dormer that has siding.

Just another theory.
Is there a prize for the right reason, and who do we call to get the answer?

Advantech on the roof? Holy sheet, are helicopters landing up there?

Lots of places around here use the 5/8 T&G and I've seen a few 3/4 T&G.

I remember many homes I did in WA that had 24" oc's and 7/16 OSB. That was normal. Spongy, but normal.

Still is the norm. We use 5/8" under tile and true 1/2" OSB the rest of the time.
