Makes me wonder if it is his trim work. If you can't hold a camera square, how can you do that stuff!

beautiful bud, thats amazing work, how many buildups are there or trim profiles in there to get the columns

the kinda stuff i really want to start doing, none of our clients want / can afford ornate trim, so im stuck doing the generic colonial trim or the odd job with some more expensive paint grade profiles. even worse is when we do have posts that need finishing, the damn drywallers get to put 6 " pieces on em with bullnose corner bead.... "nothing worse than, getting oh my god we love the trim work, but were out of money so go with the cheapest thing on the shelf"

Thanks man. "Prish-E-Ate" it.
From what I remember now,the build out the bottom were ripped 1x6 with 1x10 face on the pedestals to give the same distance in on all 3 sides of the column that will be on top, with 36 inches to the finished top of the ped, and a 1x4 with fluted 1x8 face on the columns. I capped of the top of the pedestals with a 5 " window stool. 1x10 and BC at the top with 4 or 5 inch crown and picture mold.
The top set were in more so it was a 1x4 out on the ped and 1 11/16 ( if i remeber right just a 1x4 cut in half) on the columns. The radius were cut with a router. Dont use a jigsaw. It never comes out as good.
I could go on and on , blah blah blah,...(gotta get up tomorrow) but all you really need to do is figure out where you want your shelf, how high you want the ped, and what type of base and crown , throw in a keystone block, and work with that. Lay out your flutes on a piece of scrap, and practice fluting with a fine tune adjustable router guide. I say practice because Ive F'ed up quite a few columns. Always seems like its on the last flute to.
Anyway, sketch it out on the wall if you have to, with dimentions, and make it work. And dont forget to stop your flutes. They look more profesional that way.
My first one wasnt all that great, but the more you do it and add stuff to it, the better they get.
And yeah, I hear you, getting people to pay for this stuff isnt easy.

This was the fire place mantel that was on the right wall. I laid out and cut the arch so that the closest part was still 12" away from the fire box (for code).
While I had the it down, I cut the bottom radius inlay for the base cap. I just moved the router jig (very high tech,....a 1x6 with a half circle cut in the end so the round base of the router fit tight) up 2" PLUS the width of the cutting bit ( so the bit is on the OTHER side of the line,..learned that the hard way), and finished the square cuts with a skill saw.

You could save the fluted columns and lower the shelf just where the TV would be. Gonna lose the center crown and boxes though, depending on how low she wants it (might look funky though). Or , if moneys no object (LOVE those kind of customers), you can rebuild the whole thing, and run the columns all the way up, and have your radius boxes at the top. Just make sure you have the clearance you need on the firebox.
Tell her that you dont like how the top column flutes stop so low from the crown,..even with the picture mold......Hey, it may work....
