Mess O' Hinges...

Not sure where to put these as we don't have a blacksmith area, or an ironmongery. Anyway, I asked a while back about ideas for shutters for a timber building I built in the spring. This is what I came up with. The shutters and doors are all splined douglas fir. All the shutters are bi-fold so they will fold back under the eaves. All the hinges are hand made in my forge. All 92 halves! Even reheaded some lagbolts to give them the 'old look' for the door hinges.

I'll be going back to install planters that fit either side of the doors under the bi-folds there, with more iron work on them. And will be making handles for the doors also, and bars that will catch hooks (that double as handles) on the inside of the shutters to keep them closed.

This guys wife is a wildlife biologist and really good people, we had a party the night of the installation with a visiting Armenian vet, and a penguin biologist just back from Antarctica. Quite some conversation!!

Re: Mess O' Hinges...

Thanks. I'm going back down (two hour drive) to install a couple of planters, door handles, closers for the bifolds and to fabricate something for the fireplace so he can hang a pot over the fire. I'll put pics up next week. Rich.

Here's one of all the hinges. And one of the bars/hooks and door handles.

I've said "Shoo" to a horse, that's about as close as I'll get to one of those things.
