Latest Deck Project

Some of you guys know that I'm in a transition period of quitting my "real" job to become a deck builder. I've asked a lot of questions over the winter, just thought I'd show you the first project of the year.
And bring on the criticism too, I'm all about learning and getting better.

Great lookin' deck. Is that the one you put in down here at the beach?

Yeah, about 4 miles from the beach in Rehoboth.
It was a great learning experience, meaning next time I'll add three days to the estimate.

Looks very nice. Its hard to pick on without any close ups. I guess it took 310 man hours to finish. Closest guess should get a free deck sample from Trex.

Re: Latest Deck Project

My only criticism would be that it's made of composite but that's just my personal opinion. I'm a wood guy through and through.

As for the workmanship, it looks awesome. Very nice design too.

Re: Latest Deck Project

Awww, you guys are giving me warm fuzzies. Thanks for the compliments.
440 sq/ft, plus 9 stairs. Total manhours = 180.

The biggest time factor that I didn't account for was the railing on the stairs and clipped corners. Dang, they were frustrating.

So who wins the Timbertech sample???

Oh, and the other thing I learned on this job was that it really, REALLY hurts when the impact driver slips off the screw head, goes into the finger directly on the bottom and tries to exit next to the finger nail on top. That was last Monday night, I'm starting to get the feeling back. Thank God I only had the 18 volt, not Milwakee's 36 volt!

Re: Latest Deck Project

Yea stair rails are a real pain in the butt. I always figure 2-3 days just for the stairs and the stair rails on any more that 6 steps. But I hate them the most. (You must work about the same as I do I ran the numbers on the SQ. FT. and man hours spent and it hit my dollar per hour mark right on the money)

Actually the railing is Timbertech as well--it's called Radiance Rail and only comes in white. http://www.timbertech.com/products/radiance.aspx
It's got a smooth white finish, but it's not a PVC material throughout. It's a post and sleeve system. It actually goes up pretty fast, the straight sections only took about 30 minutes each once the 4x4 posts were attached.
I've actually been looking for a complete vinyl system to work with, anyone try Fairway Railings? http://www.fairwayvinyl.com/

Re: Latest Deck Project

the deck looks good, fairway is good material, but for quik assemblly i would recomenr rdi brand endurance rail. it is good quality and most people could never tell the difference from fairway.

Re: Latest Deck Project

Onhitch, it's funny you mention RDI, I just got an e-mail back from them last week in regards to a local dealer. They said Lowes was a supplier--kind of suprised me. Any idea of price? The Timbertech Radiance Rail cost $73 for the sleeve, skirt and cap, and $125/$155 for a 6'/8' sections.

One thing I did see on Fairway's site was that they offer a rail with a glass panel insert instead of ballusters--nice touch for the right setting.

Re: Latest Deck Project

lowes is news to me also, chances are thier price is full retail. a dealer will be at ; sleeves run 10$ or so, 8' square baluster level kit in white runs 140$ +-,skirt 4$, cap 4$. fairway does offer more products and color. for white rails rdi is god quality, quick, and lower cost. most composite manufacturers that offer rails are usualy way overpriced!
