Hand Framing Roof On A Log House.
12/12 with 17/12 dormers. I didn't do the log work. Got called in for the roof framing with full dimension 2x12's.
34' to the peak, no access with man lift. The biggest monkey bars ever. Lots of climbing. Can't wait to put the steel on...

Rev - very nice & clean looking - how are you finishing the underside or is it just hidden in the attic?
Tin - also very nice & clean looking - but what are the HO's or the Archie trying to accomplish there? |

Re: Hand Framing Roof On A Log House.
Cathedral ceiling , 1x6 t&g pine.
Purlins are cut to the appropriate pitches, 1x strapping put down to accommodate the ceiling, then the rafters are nailed through the strapping into the log. The rafters are all lapped at the top and nailed together. The total rafter length is a little more than 25', but we lapped shorter ones over the purlins where possible. On the big gable at the back the rafter length is 21'. Hauling full dimension green fir up a 17/12 made for a good sleep later. Interesting job there, Tinstaafl, what's going on?

Very nice job.
Is there height adjustment built into the porch posts so they can come down with the walls as they shrink? If so do you have some photos of how that is engineered? I love that look. |

I wasn't called in for the log work but of course as is always true with log buildings there are a great many details that couldn't be (or at least weren't) anticipated. So I have been hanging off the outside of that thing with the chainsaw doing a little artistic 'license' for flashing details and the like. Yes, I got into this business building log houses, but it's been years (decades) since I've built one. It's fun to get back into it again, although I have to say it seemed like a lot less work back then!!! Haven't lost that delicate touch with the tip of the bar though.
