Re: Garden Arbor

Very Nice Job ! I built one for a customer & it looked very similar to yours. I sunked the posts in concrete too. I think it is sturdier & stronger that way. Again-looks very Nice!!

j/k ~ nice job.

We're gonna do landscape lights in the fall if I'm not too busy with the new business.

Good news ...keep at it and grow.

Didn't I tell you not to worry about minor details like customers, clients and work?

Looks real sharp Mag! I think it was good putting the posts in the concrete, really keeps it nice and stiff.

Re: Garden Arbor

Why is it difficult to get good looking PT?

I bought it from HD but only because the local supplier, Blanton Lumber Supply of Little River, was closed at noon on Saturday and it was Memorial Day weekend.

Re: Garden Arbor

Btw, I don't want to get into a "how much should I charge" type of thing here, but "how much" could I charge for building one of these?

I was hoping to fetch $6-700. Is that a reasonable number in your opinion?

Not all PT lumber is the same !! Check the percentage number on the white tag stapled to the end of the board!! Menards is putting out some very low PT ratings. I used to think PT was PT but it's not so. Check the ratings dudes, they are not all the same !!!

An unliscensed carpenter? I dont think so, you dont want us carpenters playing with electricity do you? One of those boards could fall off and hurt someone.

The numbers for the new
MCA and MCQ are way lower
for the same ratings.
Post lumber (4X, 6X,...)
is about the only thing
rated for ground contact.

I can get PT lumber somewhat close to that at HD (50 miles away), and 1 local supplier occasionally - generally all the yards & blowes leave it outside and I swear they have just pulled the ugliest crap they can find straight from the tanks & shipped them - were talking 2x4's that weigh as much as much as 2 KD 2x12's

Why not? Just like anything else, materials - labor - OH & P

People can buy kits for $99 & up or they can pay for a quality product installed properly

I read one of the "regular" yahoos in here with 3000+ posts say that your labor should be 2.5 x your material. In that case the job would bill out at $375.00 labor and material!!

That might have been me...as quoted by the building dept. when I pulled a >< GASP >< permit as a HO and needed to fill in a dollar amount.

Re: Garden Arbor

I have the electrical license and that should be enough for me to earn a decent living and have some leftover for retirement.

But in the event I come across a good customer who likes the work I do and isn't afraid to spend some money I'd like to be able to also sell some light carpentry work.

Hell, if they want to buy it I want to sell it.
