Furniture Guys/Big Dave ?
Hey guys, I have a kitchen table, think the top is oak. But it appears to have a real 'open' looking grain. Now, some bubbles have been appearing on it. Any good products I can seal this with that would be nice and smooth, and food-friendly?

Re: Furniture Guys/Big Dave ?
It looks to me like something that was too hot was set on the table and is responsible for those "bubbles".
I can't answer your question about fixing it PWG but I thought I'd offer a possible cause for you. |

Re: Furniture Guys/Big Dave ?
This is pretty common with poly. Answer is.......strip and refinish. Consider the use prior to the new finish. You may just want to oil it.

Re: Furniture Guys/Big Dave ?
Only possible (even temporary) fix might be to 'pin-hole' (or even 'knife') each spot and inject some glue, - - then press 'til dry, - - then fill hole, - - then re-coat.
Trouble is, - - it'll start comin' up in other spots soon, anyway . . . |

Ya PWG, do the "bubbles" have grain in/on them?

Sure looks like lifting veneer to me.

Re: Furniture Guys/Big Dave ?
Sorry for getting here late but went to the local drag races. Ditto on the lifting veneer. Something hot or maybe some water has seeped through to the underside. TomR has given all of the fixes that I know of.
Sorry I couldn't give you better news. Dave

Re: Furniture Guys/Big Dave ?
I know an man that refinishes woodwork in antique mercedeshttp://heritagewoodworks.com, done some work for them, When he applies veneer he applies glue to both surfaces, regular wood glue, lets both pieces dry, then as he puts the two pieces together he heats them with a heat gun to re-activate the glue a little bit at a time, due to the contours, etc he has to cover and presses the pieces in place. He removes old veneer the same way, with heat. I wonder if you could heat the area, re-activate the glue underneath and roll it out with a seam roller, like used with sheet flooring, then re-finish. Just a thought

Re: Furniture Guys/Big Dave ?
Pro,
We had a dining rm. table that looked just like that, and it bubbled just like that also. At the time my wife was ironing on some name and number decals on my son's motocross shirts, even though she was doing it over a towel the veneer bubbled like that Anyways good - luck.

Here is what your going to do. Have your wife go out and buy some nice place mats for the table. Nobody will ever know.

Re: Furniture Guys/Big Dave ?
Some veneer adhesives are heat activated. If this is the case a hot/dry iron may work in a last resort situation, no gaurantees on the effect to the finish.

Re: Furniture Guys/Big Dave ?
CRAP! Thanks for the replys. Don't tihnk its heat, no one cooks a hot meal around here anymore.
I thought it might have been from moisture from sponging it off, but guess not. I think 747 has the right idea, I told the wife to go buy a tablecloth. |
