Re: Coffer Ceiling

The craftsmanship is stellar--pat yourself on the back.

I agree it's a little heavy for the space--but I think that tiny chandelier is throwing off the scale (and why is it so high?)

Would love to see the rest of the house.

the cross pieces (Sofit?) are 5 1/2" wide. the lights are 3 1/2" old work boxes with halogen (i think) bulbs.

they are riped and mitered pieces of windsor. the windsor is 3 1/2 and i needed 2 pieces to be 5 1/2... so i riped a piece down to 2 3/4 with the fat side against the fence, thin mitered 4 pieces 5 1/2 toe to toe, and a little glue and some pins to finish it off.

thanks... the ceilings ended up being 8' 10" to the top and i dropped the ceiling in the next room to 8' to give it dimention... you would think that it suddenly goes up into the room above! the chandelier is the only thing left original to this room, you think it should be lower? i could probably get some matching links and drop it a little...

anyway, thanks for all the kind words, makes me feel better in spite of the crap i'm dealing with... i have had an aweful week and a half on my current job and really don't look forward to it... i hate sheetrock!!

Thanks! I enjoy this VERY much so... today I spend the day getting materials and when I got the job the GC and I spent about a half hour pondering options for the frieze and crown blocks, and how they would tie into the coffer and mantel without being over powering but we don't want them to get lost 11 1o 19 feet in the air.... After we got that out of the way he left and I went to work. Tommorrrow, or tonight maybe, depends on how I feel after dinner, is going to be a shop day/night, I already coped the frieze into the mantel (see my other post) and fit it to the crown blocks, now I am taking that blank back to the shop to put some detail into it.

Re: Coffer Ceiling

So photo from todays work, freize is still not up, however the molding running along the bottom of it is so the friese basically just has to be flopped up into place. The rake molding was shaped, primed and installed, the coffer was finished up with 1 1/8" nose and sove running around inside the beams and the same rake mould that is running up the walls from the frieze to the coffer was also run along the out sides of the coffer to tie it into the ceiling better. We also started "panelizing" the windows and I ran base around the room.

Re: Coffer Ceiling

Nice ceiling! I might have to show it to a client of mine. He wants a coffered ceiling in his office. We are working on the design and it's going to be mahogany.
