Amazing Siding

My father was doing the cabinets in this house, and when he went to install he snapped these pics of the siding on this house. It is near Chester, VT, Ill ask him the name of the contactor who did this to give him credit, but it is truly amazing work.

I dont know if the pictures zoom in far enough to see but its not only just the outlines of the animals, the shingles are actually carved to show the feathers of the birds and the details in the animals, its truly a piece of art

Re: Amazing Siding

That cedar siding work is artwork pure and simple. In the end, the look is so specialized, it probably ends up devaluing the property because that look does not have mass appeal. Shame.

Re: Amazing Siding

Yea, a lot of people would shy away from buying that if the owner put it on the market, just because not everybody wants that on their house, but along the same lines there are a lot of people who would pay a lot of extra money for that house solely because of the art and beauty...so the door swings both ways, but your right, it would be a very small market if they ever were looking to sell

Uhh...Yes I did and the last word I wrote was "Shame" in that IT'S A SHAME THAT ALL THAT HARD WORK MAY DEVALUE THE HOUSE.

Re: Amazing Siding

Alot of us can install siding, some of us can do a great install, I doubt many of us can do that kind of artistic work. Wether it devalues the house at resale or not doesn't really matter its what the home owner wanted and I dare say values! I think its cool and I know I will never land a job like that.

There is a guy around here who is landing alot of drywall jobs because when requested he will lay out compound really thick and then carve whetever you wnat into it to give you 3d art and he is good! Just a great whay to be competiatve. Ads value in the eye of the homeowner. I hav built decks in the front yard for some even though that can devalue the home, its what they wanted.

5*

Re: Amazing Siding

I keep wondering if it would be practical to do the prep work for that in the shop, or would it all have to be done on site?

Re: Amazing Siding

I would like to know the material cost as well as the labor cost
Someone made (or hopefully so) some good money.

With technology today, it may be a simple process and if one has ever put together toys on Christmas day could do the install very easy.

Still wih that being a new look, it probably is more than most would want to pay, let alone the labor cost.

But without question, it is some beautiful work.

Some people pay strange money for things.
One condo I worked on in Waterville Valley, NH. A condo now. The max tolerance we had to work with was 1/8" in any direction. The unit was framed, then we were brought in to get it within them tolerances. No joke, this Arch had more money than brains. He would fly in to the valley once or twice a week just to make inspections. I am talking even closets the same tolerances. Guys would spend 2 to 3 days in a closet, stringing every way to sunday, planing, scabing, what ever needed.
Walls, ceilings, floors, same thing, nothing greater than 1/8".
The ceiling had to be strung every way possible to meet his tolerances, then plywood screwed up first, strung again every posssible way, followed by bondo in dips to get this within a 1/16" tolerance. Then redwood was installed over.
We came back for his open house party for all who took part in this build. That t&g redwood on the ceiling he had painted some weird purple color. hahahaha. No joke... All in all though it did come together nice with everything completed & furnished, but still, with the extremes they get in the valley, I can just imagine winter months when the red wood shrinks. It was painted once installed, not before cause colors had not been selected at that time, from what the painter said. I'm sure he went back a time or 2 for touch ups..
Strangest job I have ever worked on in over 30 years of construction.
Cost back then in the early 80's was in the millions for a dang condo and just for him to come to in the winter to ski, go figure..

THATS NOTHING , me and my guys could knock that that job out in less than 8 years, the animals might look a little weird, but we would get it done.
