What would YOU do
If a new guy comes on the job, Tee's off into YOUR compressor and started framing, and his hose leaks like a sieve? OR asks you all day to borrow your 6' step ladder when he has two on his rack in the driveway?? Most of my life i've been a passive guy, but anymore..... Nah i can't do it! Unreasonable??

Not unreasonable at all. new or not, you should have your own tools .. and if you do have them, get them off the frickin' truck. Nothing is more frustrating when you go to grab your 4' level or sawzal and someone else is using it. it slows us down and is just plain annoying and disrespectful .. not to mention the extra wear and tear.

Don't think I would stay passive very long. Telling him that unloading his truck before starting work would make everyones day go better would be a start. Give him a 49 cent roll of teflon tape would help also. Maybe he'll get the hint. Of course maybe he's just a dick and has to be told up front

IF it doesn't impact your work/productivity and the person shows respect for your tools, I am inclined to let it go - who knows, you may need to borrow something of theirs.
However, I would be put off by the situation you described; 1. they didn't ask permission to hook into your compressor (I would call them on it) 2. repeatedly asking for your ladder when they obviously needed one more than just once or twice (after the second request I would have said "sorry I need it")
I was taught a very valuable lesson at a very young age when it comes to other's tools:
ALWAYS ask permission to borrow something that belongs to someone else and ALWAYS return the tool you borrowed in better working condition than when you borrowed it.

Yea true, but when your idle hose is using the same amount of air as my working gun......I'm sure i'm not the only one but if i have a tool in my trailer i will walk and get it before i ask to borrow anyone elses.

I completely agree.
I very rarely borrow another person's tools. I have at times had to borrow a ladder here and there but that's about it.

Me and my guys borrow our crap all the time so we dont have to walk around the house and grab a catspaw. Then just grab whatever is next time we are over there. And i would probably just give him **** about the hose. IE Dude your hose sounds about as tight as your trim work.

It's a different story if you are on the same crew. If someone on the same crew as me asks to borrow something out of my belt several times in a row, I'll give them crap about not having one, but I'll keep letting them use it. If I roll out a saw or a ladder or something, I rolled it out for the crew to use, so you don't need to ask to borrow it. On the other hand, if someone off a different crew keeps asking to borrow something, I'll end up telling them that they should have brought their own, because I need to be able to use my own tools. And if I know that they keep asking because they are to lazy to go get their own out of their truck, then they get a lot less leniency. Of course, they should ask before borrowing the saw or ladder or whatever that I rolled out for myself and the people I'm working with.
as for the hose, or more specifically the compressor, I treat it the same way I would treat a saw or a ladder- I rolled it out for my self and the people I work with, not some other sub- where is yours?
So, in short, I would have let him borrow the ladder the first time, but told him to go get his own the second time he asked, and I probably wouldn't have known about the leaky hose, because he wouldn't have been plugged into my compressor unless he had a pretty good reason for not having his own.

Very few people are allowed to use my tools since it has bein time tested that many people do not know how to properly use them.I buy only the best.
That includes co-workers of the past.Once maybe, then you better getcha one or improvise.

Reminds me of working at my dad's auto shop, had many stickers like these on our toolboxes.
I would have nonchalantly sidled over and unplugged his air line, and when he asked to borrow a ladder with his still on the truck I would have simply asked "What's wrong with yours?"

An ignorant, arrogant guy like that would soon find his compressor hose was sliced after i sent one of the guys down with my rambo knife. It's one thing to ask but don't slow down what were doing.

This is true. I was working with my brother and his buddy. His buddy has one of those box store, oil-less bostich compressors that makes a ton of noise, but not much air......After an hour or so I unplugged his compressor and plugged his hose into mine to keep the noise down. What gives he says. I can't hear the radio or myself think

I absolutely HATE borrowing tools
Im a young guy, so I dont have a ton of specialty tools yet, but I do have alot more tools than most people. My policy is when I have to borrow something from someone, I go out an buy my own that night (Obviously not on expensive items, but any hand tool)
My father gets subcontracted on most of the jobs I work on, to do cabinets and millwork. When he shows up on the jobsite he brings his own chopsaw, table saw, ladders, saws, power tools, many different toolboxes and toolbags, because its unprofessional not to have your own tools and have to borrow tools. It really shows how good you are at your job when you dont have the right tools.
I wouldnt deal with people constantly asking me to borrow tools, I dont have a problem letting someone borrow a beater chisel or a cats paw or something if they dont have theirs right handy, but I expect it to be returned, and what I really hate is when Im not wearing my belt and I turn around and someones using one of my tools out of my pouches I wont go into someones tools unless they have told me to.

I wouldn't have said anything. When he started working, I would have disconnected his hose. Hopefully he would have been way up on my ladder. When he came to down to reconnect, I would have removed the ladder. Period. If he didn't get the message, I would have made things clear at that time.
You don't do that without asking. I don't use anybody elses stuff without asking, even extension cords.
