The Weirdest HO's Service Request Call Yet!

Today i got random phone call from a HO, As i answered my office line and heard afrightin HO, So she is telling me that she thinks her new house is going to collapse So of course i asked her why she would think such a thing? Now she is telling me she had a contractor build her new home about 4 years ago and she is hearing a loud bang like a truck is running into her foundation, She had also told me this is about the 20th time she had heard this, As i proceeded her request i went to her home the same day for a inspection, I was up into the crawl space, All around her foundation, Also looking throughout her home for stress crack, Found nothing . Now I'm thinking to myself she might be losing her mind or something, But the fear in her eyes had me a believer, So i tried to comfort her that her house will not just fall over, She will know it long before it really does happen, If it does The home seemed to be build pretty well with no visual problems. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? PS. the HO is a women is in her early 30 & appears pretty normal. maybe settling and she is blowing it out of proportion? I'm not sure i never heard such a thing What do you guys think of this?

Heat duct expanding and contracting? I did service for a new home builder and that't the only thing I can think of that makes a "bang"

Tell her to take notes when she hears this noise. What time of day? Is it sunny? heating season? cooling season? louder in specific area of home? where she is located when it happens? is she moving around? standing still? Is the blower running on the air handler?

If the cold air return is panned under a hallway, that can be a problem. Seen it several times. Very loud bang when the joist flexes under load.

Does it happen about the same time of day about the same day each week?

Ask her when her garbage pick up is.

I have also thought of this myself. But the only thing is she went with electrical heat with no AC yet, She explains the bang more like a boom that shakes the whole house, (even her pictures on the wall rattle) So i also asked her did she ask her neighbors if they heard any types of noise throughout there house? She told me yes, she had asked but they heard nothing. I thought maybe they were blasting dynamite or something near by. But if nobody else heard this it wouldn't be that, I really don't know I'm puzzled

Ask her if this happens when she is in the shower or dishwasher running etc. I have seen and heard (Sounded like a shot gun) PVC pipe expanding around a bath when showering and not enough clearance or a fitting hanging up on the framng when it expands and suddenly lets go.

Re: The Weirdest HO's Service Request Call Yet!

Contracting is a people business, and there's all kinds of nuts in the bin. The funny stuff keeps me doing this.

I rented a backhoe, had it delivered by semi. Did the job, took the keys to the hoe back to the rental yard and told em to pick it up the next day. 9am I get a call from the rental yard, the 60 year old lady blocked in the backhoe with her Olds and wouldn't move it until I came down there! She thought they were repo guys stealing my equipment.

Who knows what that bang was. Could've just been a trashcan hitting the siding, an animal, or any one of a hundred things.

It's the figuring it out and figuring out what kind of nut you pulled from the bin of life that will make a good memorable anecdote for years to come.

Good luck and have fun!

If she is hot, I can leave tonight to see if I can help her out.

I have a friend with a wife like this. She's 36 and from NJ if that means anything. Every new sound drives her into a panic. Ol#2, from Boston has pretty much settled down from when I first met her but she used to be this way. Yankee thing?

I used to live on the other side of the fence of a housing project. The multiple gunshots throughout the night didn't phase me after a few weeks.

That was the main reason i put everything aside and left to check it out..As for the little investigation over night i didn't even think of that one Sounds like a pretty good idea! So of course because she looked good I'm gonna continue to investigate until i find out whats causing this, Who knows maybe even longer, I will even throw in a free pipe cleaning for her

But to be on the serious side, the way she explains the noise that happened a few times is like a big truck running into her foundation. I would love to hear for myself. But i guess it happens at random times, So i joked with her and said instead of calling a contractor you might wanna call a priest.
PS. You guys would love this one she is very friendly too.. HAHA maybe i should ask her to take a picture for my fellow tradesman's on the Internet

Probably just those damn neighborhood kids firing off M/80's. tis the season

I think the guys are on to something with the duct work. I had a house that made a loud bang everytime I stepped in a certain area. But the sound traveled so it took me a while to realize that it was the duct work.

Are you sure she said "I heard a banging" and not "I need a banging?" I would confirm if I was you, just to make sure you evaluating the right problem and yes a few pictures would help in different parts of the house, bath, running shower, kitchen, floor etc, maybe we can spot what it is there that banging

You might have to stay the night to get this figured out being as it IS random. Obviously you need to hear it in order to form an opinion.

I might also suggest a Shiraz/Merlot for red or Chardonnay/Pinot Grigio for white plus a nice scented candle from Yankee Candle as you'll probably be a while 'waiting' for the bumping noise.
