Vaulted Ceiling Beam...
Howdy,
I'm sketching up a 22x24 addition with gable roof featuring a vaulted ceiling. 6-12 roof. Does anyone have an approximatization of the size of the ridge beam that will be required, before I get one engineered? I have not done this with a lower pitch roof like this before .. ![]() Thanks |

Need more info. Snow loads?, which way 22 or 24? State? could all have an effect.

Re: Vaulted Ceiling Beam...
If you're trying to save the cost of hiring an engineer, then there is some computer software made for calculating the size of beams. The code book gives floor tables which are pretty straight forward for sizing floor joists, but a ridge beam is a little more complex, don't know how you would find it in the code book. And it would probably have to be a glu-lam or paralam if you don't want to use collar ties.
I worked for one builder who would never use an architect or an engineer, they were too expensive. He would use a computer program to size everyone of his beams. As long as it passes through the building department, I don't see anything wrong with it. |

Re: Vaulted Ceiling Beam...
I think the roof load here in NY is something like 75-80 psf..
The beam will span 22' When the time comes to put it in place, I might not have access to a lift to set it in place, so myself and a couple of guys will probably do it. If it was going to be very very large, I may downsize the addition slightly. Most likely I would prefer no collar ties, but I may use them depending on how many would be required... I do like the openess without them though. |

Re: Vaulted Ceiling Beam...
The house I'm on now has a 6 pitch vault that is 32' X 26'(< beam length). I figured triple 24" lvl's with I-joist rafters. Just to be safe I ran it by the engineer and he said the triple 24's was good and 2x12's without collar ties was sufficient for rafters...
The thing you gotta remember about ridge beams is that it weighs more than you think! Make sure your transfer load materials and footings are adequate! |

Re: Vaulted Ceiling Beam...
I constructed a 12' x 16' addition with beam spanning 12' and it called for single 14" LVL with 2x12 rafters 12" oc no collar ties. Of course there wasnt any snow load here in NC but it was ran through and engineer. So the triple 24's is looking pretty good for your case. Just remember they are heavy so hire some extra labor!!
