Termite Damage?

Hello. I am renovating my basement and I found this spot of damaged wood. I think it's old termite damage, but I wanted to be sure. There is no live insect activity. I don't think this is a load bearing wall based on the fact that there is a space beneath the two pieces of wood adjacent to this piece. Can I skin over this and put up new drywall?

thanks,
Nick

Re: Termite Damage?

You should have a professional termite inspector verify that it is inactive. That person should also be able to determine if the damaged area is in need of repair. Taking the cheap way out and assuming that it is inactive (esp. if you are inexperienced in the field) and just covering the problem up can lead to having to redo the work again in the future as well as added damage.
