Storm Door Problem

I got roped into installing a storm door for a customer. Storm doors no biggie. I have an issue with this one. I have an entry door with 2 sidelights the same height as the door, and there is a transom light also. The space between the entry door and the storm door will be 1 3/8". I feel that I should fir this out because it looks like the lockset will hit the entry door before it will latch. My problem is that the jamb is one piece with the edges rounded over. I thought that I would simply fir this out with some 1" to get my clearance. I think that this will not give me a nice clean look from the side. I hope I am describing this well enough to get some possible solutions. I thought that using some wood filler of some sort might do the trick. Any ideas?

Re: Storm Door Problem

I have had this happen as well. I forget the circumstances but the lockset for the storm doors is usually around 39 1/2" from top or bottom. Check if it clears, and if not, position the storm latch so it falls in between the dead bolt and door knob. If the storm is pre-bored and conflicts then your on the right track with some furring just be aware the sweep will become useless if you do too much.

Thank you. I did not even think to see how far off the threshold I can fur out. I am feeling like a DA on this one. Too much thinking for a storm door.

Re: Storm Door Problem

You need to extend the wood between the prehung and the sidelights so it is flush with the top molding. Generally this extension is 2.25" and you can order the door with this done or use 2 layers of 5/4 stock. Rip your first layer at 2" (the same width as the mull) and your second at 1", attach the 2" layer first and then center your second layer to create a 1/2 revel on the sides---this should leave you with 36" for your storm door RO.

Sometimes, I find that installing the storm door, can be more of a challenge than the exterior door. All types of adjustments, and things to consider, varying by manufacturer, It takes a good deal of time, to learn all the tricks IMO.

My friend I think the manufacturer may provide a stick-on template to show exactly what to do and from where you can do what in the latch set. This is extremely helpful. If one is not provided, determine the height of the latch set, then carefully mark the screw positions with a pencil. If you still having problem with it then why don't you contact them?

Re: Storm Door Problem

Hi. You had several pictures of a storm door build out on an entry with sidelights. I was unable to open those pictures for some reason. Could you send me those pictures of the process? ibookem2@comcast.net thanks D

Thanks alot for the great info. I think that there is no other project that will make you cuss your trade and question your abilities like a storm door.
