Heck, I should go into business. They're easy things to make yourself.
Make the feet and beam from stable 3/4" plywood, fit 2 carriage bolts from underneath, some washers and wing nuts, and cut slots in the beam. Voila, stair tread gauge.

You're right. It's not rocket science, but I've learned that it's usually cheaper to buy something that works rather than taking time to build it myself. I'm lazy.

I have an old Stair Tool Tread gauge and love it. I have used others and some home made jobers however the Tread gauge is always perfect when I need it. I have lent it to a friend who is now looking to get his own. I often struggle with taking the time to fabricate some of the jigs and tools we use or to purchase it. It usualy works out for the better if I buy it, mainly because I takes time to make things perfect.

Re: Stairtool. Stair Gauge

The stairtool really shines when the skirtboard has a slight tilt. You get your setting locked on then you can bend the middle slightly up before you remove so you don't scratch the skirt. I've had to do some heavy backcutting to squeeze the finish tread in.
