Special Vix Drill

hey guys i was wondering if any of you ever heard of a vix drill that actually drills all 4 hinge holes for a hardwood door at one time. The company i work for heard about it and has been trying to find it for a while because we are going to put in a few hundred hardwood doors. I believe they said it was a special drill that did it or just a special bit. All help is appreciated.

Re: Special Vix Drill

The vix drill bits simply center the hole for hinge installation. They cost about $10-$15 each. Try this http://www.woodcraft.com/family.aspx?FamilyID=2022.

Re: Special Vix Drill

Neither did I.

Search "prehung door machines" on the internet. A lot of companies come up that sell equip for building door units. Most of the equip is higher dollar but there were also some that had air operated hand tools that feed screws for hinges and work tables that stand up, rotate etc to gain production time among other items. Just looking at the pictures you may be able to get some pointers to save time. A lot of these items are most likely $500-$2000.

Re: Special Vix Drill

I've seen some gang drill presses, but never heard anything about a gang vix bit. I'm wondering how it would figure different placements. I would suppose that it would be....adjustable.

Cancer? Everything causes cancer in CA.

Re: Special Vix Drill

Go to a local lumber yard or two that has a door shop. Watch how they do it and ask the lead guy some questions.

The last one I saw was fairly simple I recall. Just a few air operated slides, routers, feeder table. The guy threw about 2-3 levers and screwed the hinges with an air driver trying to keep up with the machine. He may have had a hand held center punch device to align over the hinge holes but I'm not sure.

At this point I'd call the hinge mfg's tech folks or regional sales reps. They go around to all the shops and see how it's done. Stanley, Baldwin, theres one other ?

Is that the same operation that sets the mortises too deep or shallow, drills the holes off center, and puts the hinge screws in crooked? If it is, then my local distributor (Reeb) must have the same machine.

Re: Special Vix Drill

Does it really take that much longer to drill four holes with one self-centering/Vix bit?

holy ganole. You too? I just hung a door Thursday and couldn't figure out why it was hinge sprung. (push the door closed w/no hardware it pops open slightly) No jamb contact with door and no jamb stop binding. jamb square to the the wall face with equivalent sliding shims in both directions. then I noticed the top and bottom hinge leafs were angled out of the door hinge mortise. Yup REEB . guess one out of three hinge mortises are not bad.

Re: Special Vix Drill

Yea if doors get any worse(if its posible),i'm just going to do all the mortising myself. You would think it takes longer but with all the time you spend making the ****z doors work it will end up being faster. Not to mention i've even had some doors delaminate from the garbarge wood and cardboard structure. Raised panel masonite doors also around humidity, not good. Not too long ago i've refurbish some old raised panel doug fir doors, what a pleasure to work on a real door (about 40-50 years old).Joints still tighter than a bulls azz.
