Setting Up The Shop

We are setting up the newest addition to the Company, our shop in Manchester, VT. We started moving in about two weeks ago.

Nice size for what we need to do. It's about 18' x 70' plus a separate, but attached office.

We have a ton of pre-fab work we can do on our current project in this shop. It's just a 10th of a mile from our supplier and painter who is pre priming and first coating before we install.

I'm also experimenting with custom made cabinets and hope the shop may find it's own wings without relying 100% on our Renovation business to survive.

Looks like a good start. I have been snowmobiling VT for 10 years From Colrain Mass to the Derby border. Love the area.

i personally think its useless, unless your making cabinet all day long, i see wet wood would be a problem, do you have a vacuum setup yet? those shop saws love to trow splinters, i my self would like to get a shop but its either that or rent what you paying / mth?

I have a shop that is 25 x 52 and 23 x 60, side by side. The real limitation is it's width. I hope it works for ya. Looks like you have some good equipment to start.

Re: Setting Up The Shop

Yes, we have a dust removal system, very important when working in an enclosed environment. That's why the need for a cabinet saw and not an open bottom saw. These kind of environments can get very unhealthy, very quick, when you have two guys working 40 hrs a week.

The safety part of the saw will speak for itself when you consider the cost of just one trip to the hospital.

Re: Setting Up The Shop

You'll also need an air cleaner. Just because you have a (good) dust collection system doesn't keep the air clear. Keep it safe.

I'm only committed to one year I'll feel things out here and see where it leads.

Thanks Leo!

Have you had good or bad luck with any certain types? As you may be able to tell, I'm stuck with a few different brands due to my local supplier. I'm very serious about health and safety.

Re: Setting Up The Shop

Jason,

I've managed to turn out some pretty large projects in my small shop, so you'll be alright, even with only 18" width...

I second Leo's advice for an air cleaner... You'll still get a lot of fine dust in the air even with a powerful DC setup.

Since you're ready to invest a few bucks, throw those orange clamps to the side and start stocking up on some good parallel clamps. Woodcraft has the Bessey K-bodies on clearance right now...

WTF Napoleon above the OHD????

40X60Dedicated shop I built (for a customer)
used 2 salvaged furnace blowers
with filter racks fabbed to hold 3 layers
of disposable filters.
He always said he was happy with it.
I have the same deal in my humble
little shop.

just saw your last post.
Jet seems to be one of your brands.
They have several air cleaners.

Same here... Years ago I had a 20" box fan with a pleated filter taped to the back hanging from the ceiling. It worked... sorta...

Re: Setting Up The Shop

I would be more than happy with a "humble little shop" for myself, but when you factor in "employees" and "employee compensation insurance", you may want to take health a bit more serious.
