Setting Dock Posts
We've got a project coming up involving a dock. Normally we stay away from docks and decks but this is a very good customer and he won't let anyone else on his property.
Question is how do you go about setting the posts in three feet of water? We've got a few ideas but would like to hear more. The last ya whoo that did it did something wrong because when the lake froze the dock heaved... We can't let that happen. Any ideas would be appreciated. TFG |

Re: Setting Dock Posts
The last post is correct. A few things to note, the best way to help keep a piling from pulling out in ice is to use a tapered pole and put the "Butt" end down. This allows the ise to slide up and when te levels drop due to tide change and such it breaks the ige around it. If you are using 6X6 posts it helps to attach a 2X6 "Cleat" to the sides at the bottom before you jet them down. Most pilings work on "Skin" friction for bearing not really "End" bearing like a foundation. To "Jet" them in is to use a pump and pipe type wand to "Suspend" the sand at the lake bottom and sink the piling, like wiggling your toes at the beach sinks your feet. When you remove the jet/waterthe sand sets up and holds the piling. Just dont drop anything heavy like a tape or hammer because it wont stop till it hits the end of the jet, good luck.
