Scrap Pile Lumber Project

Had a bunch of cuts left over from a trim job and used them up here. Bought the rosette blocks and and fluted pieces. Everything else is quarter sawn red oak. Tile are made by a local tile artist, they were convex, different thickness and out of square, she said she does that on purpose? Did this while waiting for other things on the job. 100 year old house floors drop, corners not plumb, you know the drill.

Looks nice. But I think you should have continue the wrap around with the wood, so that the molding return doesn't look so lonely. Keep up the good work.

Leo?
What would you have thought about
returns on the face?
Keep it all in the same plane?

If you mean continue the return on top, I thought it would look too top heavy if I did that. When viewed from the front it makes that indent in the wall show less. Whenever I would finish something I would usually think I should have done a little more or a little less. Nowadays, I realize I don't do perfect work I do the best I can come up with given the situation. Still love my job.
Thank you Ibuprofen.

If the HO doesn't just love it,
I'd be surprised!

But then, some folks wouldn't be happy
if you hung 'em with a brand new rope!
( For Leo, it'd hafta be new Kentucky hemp.)

Clicking on this thread title, I wasn't expecting something as beautiful as what you created - that's simply a kick ass mantlepiece, no matter where the wood came from !!

Thank you Ibuprofen.

Wrap the side section of the fireplace area, not the top.

I follow, the homeowner mentioned building a shelf area there for entertainment like a plasma TV. He already has the wires under the floor boards and in the wall. I agree what you suggests looks better. First I get the house trimmed with 3 pc base up to 9" all quarter sawn oak, then he says can we do something with the fireplace and maybe I'll do shelving. I get done with this guy and then he adds another couple days. I think everytime he gets more money to burn, I get a call. The doors are all quarter sawn throughout the first floor including 7'0" French door.
The problem I had was making things even around the fireplace, he already had the tile and I had to do pretty wide grout joints to get everything even. But with a little more planning I could have done what you suggest.
