Replacing Kitchen Soffit
On most jobs it is totally removed. In some cases such as second floor plumming it just gets replaced.
I've done this many ways over the years. This is the order of my preference. 1. 3 5/8 metal track top and bottom. 2x4 studs 2. All metal 2x4 3. All wood 2x4 Anyone do it differenty ? Better ? stronger ? Thanks for looking. |

5/4 x 3 spruce ladders, or plywood rungs with 5/4 x 3 spruce rails, or, drywall screwed to 5/4 on wal and ceiling with 5/4 on corner for corner bead, (no rungs)

Re: Replacing Kitchen Soffit
Flush Soffit: We prefer a flush soffit - not as much finish on the corner next to cabinet and a trim can be added if so desire:
We Use a 2 x 2 on the ceiling as a cleat, cut 1/2" ply / osb and screw to cleat then add a bottom cleat to bottom edge. The cleat is at 11" from back wall. Then we add a cleat on wall and cripple in 2 x 2's every 16" to 2 ft or so We hold this back 1/2" for drywall to be added For Soffits that overhang - we use same method and usually have a 1 1/2" overhang with the drywall - Usually have to have the soffit completely drywalled and taped, finished before cabs can go in. Flush method above can even be done after cabs are in. Terry |

Re: Replacing Kitchen Soffit
I go the ladder route, I build the ladder and screw it in. Shim a little depending on the home.
Metal track is good, but I build with 3/4 stock. Light and easy to move if needed.
