Rafter Lengths
planning a rm addn w/ a hip roof, 8/12 pitch,18wx20d. rafters 16"oc, 12" oh
are the hip rafters 2x8 or 2x10? field rafters are 2x6. length? common rafter length? i was never the cut man on a roof so i'm winging this matl list, would appreaciate any help. thanks |

The pitch factor for an 8:12 is 1.20, so your common rafter length is total run (building centerline to outside of wall plus soffit depth) x 1.2.
2x8s should be plenty for the hips. In theory, the roof structure carries the hip, and not vice-versa.
