Quikdrive Advice

Hi Guys, My wife bought me a qd250 with Makita drill and extention for Christmas. I want to screw down 2x6 redwood on to 2x joist. What is a good screw? And should I buy the qd300 attachment to use 3 inch screws. I guess my question is are 2 and 1/2 inch screws long enough? for what I am doing. That's the longest screw the qd250 will take. Thanks Mike

For 1 1/2" decking I'd go with 3" screws. They have some red colored screws that would work great with redwood.

Make this two votes for 3" screws in 2x6 decking.

Don't forget that redwood is susceptable to staining from galvanized screws. Stainless is the only way to keep it looking good for long.

When it comes to screwing, go as long as you can. I know that I often wish I had a few more inches.

Re: Quikdrive Advice

They may have improved, But I reacall throwing mine across the deck, taking it to a pawnshop for a hundred bucks and sending the pawn ticket to the company and telling them that I got a hundred bucks out of it. The screws were made out of a soft alloy that allowed the heads to become all boogered up and spin just before seating if they hit anything like a knot in treated pine. I have returned to my knees with a plain old bosch deck driver.

I hear that! Some of those ss screws are softer than others, and if they're not driven perfectly straight in, or if they hit a knot, they'll cam out. I hate needing to carry a pair of vise-grips in my back pocket. Even worse are the ones where the head snaps off just before they're driven flush....

Re: Quikdrive Advice

to all those who will use it regularly....it is the best thing since sliced bread.

I have three that we use to screw subfloor down....simple and simply fast.

it you plan on just 800 sq feet at a time once every other month... the tool isn't worth the expense with the screw cost included... it's made for production and extremely large areas
