Porch Look, - - House Feel

Here's a 'project' on the front of MY HOUSE that I just (well, almost) finished . . .

It was a screened-in 'slab' porch, - - now it's a 'step-down bump-out' to the living room with a crawl-space and a new (butterfly) hip-roof 'lined' with copper.

The columns flanking the front door are 'halve-cut' Permacast columns, - - and the outside corner columns are 'three-quarter-cuts', - - with my remaining 'quarter-cuts' lining the inside corners.

The 'glued-up' raised panels, base trim, stiles and rails, capping, pilasters, column back-bands, fascia, freize-boards, window casings, pediments, etc. (did I forget anything??) are all 'frontier-Azek'.

Hopefully, - - I gave the place a little 'one-of-a-kind'(?) curb appeal!!

Still needs another coat of paint, - - gotta install the soffitting, - - and pour and 'perimeter-brick' a 5' X 3' front landing . . . oh, - - and 'raise-grade' about 4"-6".

Oh, yeah, - - and it might be nice to even 'start' the INSIDE sometime soon, - - Oh, well, - - maybe later!!

Here's the butterfly-hip-roof 'mid-phase' . . .

Jeez, - - what I'll go through to not have to see a 'front gutter'!!

Re: Porch Look, - - House Feel

Thanks, guys . . .

Azek's real easy to work with, - - machines real nice, - - just gotta make sure it's stored 'flat' all the time, - - even if it's just for a few minutes, - - and otherwise, it sure does throw a lot of 'charged' particles on ya'!!

I try to stay away from real long pieces if possible, - - because of the expansion-factor in the heat of the summer, - - though I did use 10'ers on the front fascias, - - hopefully no problems, - - I'll know by July, I guess.

Re: Porch Look, - - House Feel

Ok, - - don't have a pic what it 'really' looked like (total 'crapola'), - - but here it is after I 'wrapped' it in PVC coilstock (temporarily), - - you know, - - about 10 YEARS AGO!!

Re: Porch Look, - - House Feel

It started out as a project to just build 3 walls, - - that is, - - til the porch collapsed during an 'under-pin' attempt ( ) and the roof was so rotted-out that when I attempted to shoot the upper wall-plates into it I was 'duckin' chunks of wood shrapnel!!

Ended up replacin' the porch slab with a crawl-space (though I still laid-in perimeter-brick to keep that 'porch-feel', - - and of course, - - ended up just tearin' off the complete roof-frame, - - and just startin' over!!

Now starting on Monday, - - back to the PAYING JOBS, PLEASE!!

Yah, - - and what a 'buster' doing this and even 'trying' to keep up with the 'scheduled' work, - - as I say, - - most of this job was 'unexpected'.

DUMMY ME!!

Re: Porch Look, - - House Feel

By the way, talkin' about 'machining' the Azek, - - all those pilasters and pediments are 'lock-mitered' . . .

Didn't get any pics of that, though . . .

Thanks, King, - - those panels, and everything else, - - except the columns, - - are all Azek (solid PVC 'trim-boards'), - - sort-of a 'solid-vinyl'.

Foundation is 20" wide X !2" thick footing (at a 3'-depth) with 8X8X16 CMU's.

Re: Porch Look, - - House Feel

with that azek stuff, does it come in boards, and you work it like wood, or does it come manufactured, and you just install it?

Yah, - - comes in boards, - - 1X4's, 1X6's, 1X8's, 1X10's, 1X12's, - - and can also be ordered in sheets of 4X8, - - also, I believe it comes in different thicknesses, - - but I always use 3/4" thick. There's 'traditional' which comes 'flat-surfaced' on both sides, - - or there's 'frontier' (what I used), - - which comes flat on one side and 'wood-grained' on the other.

I used the back (flat-side) for the panels and pilasters capping, - - didn't want a wood-grain 'dirt-catch' on the flat surface (or in this case), - - 'slightly-pitched', for water run-off.

For more info . . .
