Re: Pole Barn Garage
A router and a homemade jig work good for cutting out your notches, preferable a plunge base so that you can do it in a few passes if necessary. Also, living where you are you should know that you shouldn't put any wood close to the ground. The best construction method would be pouring frost walls up at least 16" out of the ground. Everything up there rots because of the snow and moist conditions when it is at ground level and the pt will even soak up water and moisture and transfer it.

Good point, if you use PT make sure it is rated for ground contact. The posts are but most framing lumber is not. |

Re: Pole Barn Garage
Mike.....don't forget tiedowns. You are in a high wind region so make sure your roof and truss are tied to the foundation. My company offers an excellent and economical method which you can review at my website. (check profile) You could use 8-12 and keep it secure from the high winds.

Re: Pole Barn Garage
I built a 30'x40' last year. I told the local lumber yard what I wanted and they printed up a material list and the plans. The plans along with a property survey were enough for the building inspector.
The plans called for 6x6 corners with 4x6s 8' oc in between. I switched to all 6x6s. Also, tarred the bottom of the 6x6s up to 12" above grade. The truss carrier is a double 2x12, one on each side of the 6x6s with trusses 4'oc. Code didn't call for the carrier to be notched. As 72Chevy4x4 said, go with a 2x12 skirt board. I used a 2x8, as per the plans and regret it. If I had used a 2x12, I could have kept the board and batten siding that much further above grade. |

WormDrive, Thanks for the great tip on tarring the bottoms like that !! I definatly will do it ! My truss carriers are 2 x 10 & they are requiring me to notch both sides. Gotta do what they tell ya even though there will never be any snow load on it with a 12/12 pitch & metal roof. Anyhow I got my Holes dug & 12" sauna tubes installed & a concrete mix footer at the bottom of the hole below the frost line that they required. Did it today with my stepson's help ,as the weekends is when I do my own personal work! God, When is it gonna end ?? I guess I just keep myself too occupied ! Gotta get some fishing & golf in one of these damn days!!!!!!!!! Hey Thanks Again- I really appreciate it Last edited by mrmike; 05-30-2009 at 05:36 PM. |
