Outdoor Cabinets.... Any Suggestions?!?!

Hiya everyone! I am working on a bid for a client that is remodeling her enclosed porch to have an open outdoor kitchen (more like a bar) the only think seperating it from the elements is the roof and the pool enclosure. What I'm having some trouble with is finding some sort of outdoor cabinet that isnt $600-$1000 a piece. I was thinking maybe if I couldnt find something suitable (and within budget) that maybe my carpenter could build something suitable but I still need something weatherproof. The whole feel of the outdoor area is tiki bar. I also want to be able to use something that I can make the bar match. The bar is all open underneath so that doesnt require cabinetry. The two support poles of the tiki roof over the end of the bar are going to be cypress posts and I was thinking of using cypress posts for the support posts on the bar. I dont know, maybe I'm out of my mind a little! Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Red wood and cedar are good woods for outside use.

But, I wonder what kind of durability you would get out of
cabinets made from Cedar?

I made a wet bar on a deck for a customer out of some material left over from a composite deck. the front of the bar we laid the lumber into a herringbone design. it was really an experiment, but it turned out pretty good. I don't know how it has held up. the top was made out a single sheet of copper.

Now see...thats one of the things I thought of. Just frame out the cabinet area and then put up some of that composite decking material. I just wasnt sure how that would look. But I want it to definitely have the feel of the tiki bar. Most likely the countertops and the bar are going to be tiled to match eachother since the countertop she wants is probably going to be out of budget. Thank god I talked her out of granite!

Hey,

Could Spar varnish be a consideration? It's for exterior use, water resistant, and since the units are basically protected from severe weather it's a reasonable solution...
