Old Porch Flooring

My neighbor asked me to look at his front porch flooring last night.
House was built in early 1900s.Most of the wood is rotten, looks like 3/4 material, painted. Most of it I think is original. Can someone suggest where
I might find something similar to replace it with. They want to try to keep
the same "historic look". I dont usually work on older homes so my
resources are somewhat limited on this one.
Thanks.

Most likely it's t&g Fir flooring. Where are you from? How wide are the boards?

Re: Old Porch Flooring

Most likely fir flooring. I think it comes 3/4 and 7/8" in either clear for stain or jointed for paint. Mohogany is also an option.

Worked on one of these types of porches last fall. I also had access underneath by removing a lattice panel. Some of the framing was also rotted ;especially, in the area of the porch near the top of the steps. One of the boards had insects burrowed in it. T&G is available at lumber yards.

Re: Old Porch Flooring

Its more than likely Doug fir, but we're here and you're there. Your best bet is to remove a piece and bring it to a lumber yard ,they will probably be more help identifying it then us.

Re: Old Porch Flooring

I'd have to agree it's Douglas Fir too. You'll be hard pressed to find anything today that will hold up like old-growth DF...or even old pine.

I've had success with Phillipine Mahogany and a good preservative/stain. Cetol marine finishes are great if you want to stain it.

Re: Old Porch Flooring

Thanks for the input. I will check TW Perry, they arent far way from me.
I know they will want it painted as it is now, so I think I will look into fir
or pine . As for bugs, I saw alot of carpenter ants carrying eggs into the floor. They spread Borax
all over the place. Ive heard it works but dosent really matter if its all gettin
torn out. Thanks again.

They'll just stand on the sidelines until the new wood is installed (licking there little lips) then start eating it as well.

Re: Old Porch Flooring

We can get treated YP 1X4 T&G here.
Would think it available in MD as well.
Sometimes it's even available KD, if not
I've been lucky when I can sticker it
and let it air dry for a week.
Seems to lose most of the moisture
in that first week if it's not covered.
It wants to sit about another 6 weeks
before the oil primer, and paint.
