Need Some Advice.
i have been doing renovations and had a taste of every trade working with my old man since i was 10. I started my own company mostly focusing on roofing because i know how to price and im comfortable in my bidding. id like to start doing more, im a good carpenter just most of my experience isnt as a cotract job. basically i have a customer who wants his house sided with vinly and all the soffits doors trim everything wrapped in aluminum. im from maine so the cost of living may be a little less around here but any advice on the way you charge would be appreciated. how much /sq for vinly instalation and a price/ ft for the aluminum.. is that how most of you would figure.
again im new to contract work and tend to underestimate the time it will take. |

Re: Need Some Advice.
The Craftsman Estimator programs can help you get your barrings while you start out. Profit and over head not included with their pricing.

Re: Need Some Advice.
Ouch - vinyl siding in Maine when its 10 degrees out? Sweet
Even if I lived right next to you, & gave you the rates I charged normally - they wouldn't help you in the middle of winter. Why - you either have to tent the work area & / or work at a dramatically slower pace. Go buy Michael Stones book on Markup & Profit. Also dittos to the above for National Estimator - its not perfect but it can at least get you started out. |

Re: Need Some Advice.
Like previously stated no one elses rates will help you. everything varies in different markets; materials, labor, overhead etc...
I would say figure the job to the best of your ability and charge T&M. Go back when the job is done and figure out what it cost you per sq (100 sq ft) and now you have your base for future jobs. Spencer |

Re: Need Some Advice.
Maine man, what part of Maine we talking about? I'm from Maine and maybe I can guide you a little...key word little, since you know as well as I do that if you're in the county, you are already shoveling snow. If you're in Cape Elizabeth, they're giving you mocha grandes. If you are in the Sanford area, you are going to be low ballin'.

Do not be ignorant. Punctuation, Spelling, Grammar and SYNTAX are some of the single most important elements of ANY business deal. Spoken or typed! Perio-Fookin-D!

He should try reading some of the building science forums. Some of the brightest people there and they could care less about a typo here and there. It's about sharing information on forums like these. It's not a damn spelling bee. I guess tcleve won't be able to learn much if he can't get past a few screw ups every now and then. His loss.
