Need Advice For Installing Base Cabinets

Met a friend/customer today. They want to install some base cabinets to seperate the kitchen from the living room. The cabs' will not be installed to a wall. How can I mount them to the floor if there is no access to the floor from the bottom of the cabinet? The counter top will be about 36" to make a sort of bar BTW....

Thoughts, opinions or advice????

if there's nothing underneath like water tubes for in floor heating, you can glue and screw down some cleats, then screw sideways into the cleats from the toe kicks and brad nail into the sides.

That should do it.

Turn your cabinet upside down and cut a piece of 3/4" plywood that fits exactly inside the the panels and kicks, - - then attach two 2 X 3's to the plywood along your front and back edges, - - cut to the same length as the plywood, - - then attach your plywood to the floor (2 X 3's up), - - then just drop your cab onto your 'form'. Then you can either let it sit just like that, - - or you can also screw down through your cabinet floor into your 2 X 3's . . .

You may want to consider pre shimming the floor level where the base cabinets are being set and fastening the cleats over or next to the shims. otherwise you will have difficulty shimming the base cabs with the cleats in the way.

Re: Need Advice For Installing Base Cabinets

I generally do like framer said.

Another trick that has worked where I couldn't do the cleats ( previously installed floating floor) was to use the 6" long hex-drive landscaping screws (for screwing together timbers) They have a long smooth shank, hex head, and threads about the last 2" or so. Once all the cabients are leveled and assembled they are a fairly rigid unit and don't take much to hold them down. I use the screws along with fender washers installed right in the cabinet corners (for strength) to snug them down. On the floating floor I drilled a 3/4" clearance hole around the screw pilot hole to allow for movement.

Very good idea Tom. A little more labor involved, but I like it.

Thanks, - - and as far as setting it, - - I'd put in place once, - - shim it up to level, - - scribe it to the largest gap, - - pull it back out, - - cut the scribe, - - then re-install perfectly level. He's not going to want shims showing on this application, - - or want trim all the way around . . .

Re: Need Advice For Installing Base Cabinets

I set my cabinets on tile on concrete. No way to screw to the floor. I don't really want to damage the tile in case someone wants to change cabinets in the future.

I set cabinets, screwed together and shimmed. Liquid nails cabinets to floor tile, then install the finished backs, ends, and toe kicks to hide any adhesive.

Re: Need Advice For Installing Base Cabinets

Why worry about fastening them at all. I just ripped out an older Kitchen and the only thing holding the island down was the plumbing for the sink. It had a good sized bar top on it too.

I somtimes have to wonder just what people are thinking. Then second guess myself and realize I probably don't want to know
