Looking For A Special Tool
I'm looking at a large parking lot bumper installation (150 units) which each require 2 rebar stakes installed. Has anyone ever heard of a jack hammer type tool to install the rebar? Using a sledgehammer would get tiring somewhere around the 10th bumper.

Re: Looking For A Special Tool
There is an attachment for a
roto-hammer I've seen used for driving ground rods and such. There was a thread about it last year in the electrical forum I think.

Re: Looking For A Special Tool
I have done it before. Cut the rebar on a 45 degree angle. Then the next straight. then the next on a 45.
The first cut will produce one flat end and one 45 end which will act as a spike. This first cut will ALSO produce the bottom of the next spike. This is why the next cut need be straight and thusly producing the TOP of the next spike. It is just alternation. Then they will drive fairly "easy" (never really easy). |_____/_____|_____/_____|_____/_____| Post Script: You may also purchase hammer-able spikes. http://www.interwestsafety.com/store...?idProduct=237 I personally like my spikes to be 18".

I've seen from afar an electrician putting in the ground rod. Took just minutes if that. They have bigger ones at the local rental place I've used to tap a shallow well, but that's more than likely overkill for what you are talking about.

Re: Looking For A Special Tool
I've wanted a Bosch rotary hammer, but never had an opportunity to justify it (like that matters when it comes to tools).
thanks Malco-I cut my wood stakes in the same fashion and was leaning toward 18" too. Figured a 24" stake won't have any additional holding power. I speced out #5 rebar versus #4-anyone have data if the 5/8" has considerably more holding power to keep the bumper from being pushed with an automobile? |

Re: Looking For A Special Tool
Yes! Shunk is quite right. The cars tire size is just about enough to go over the bumper rather than push it. If the bumper was say 2 inches taller then it may be a "Push Thing".
I do believe that the larger gauge rebar will be better. BTW???? Rubber or Crete or Asphalt type Bumpers? If rubber, more force will be absorbed by the spikes due to the lower Inertia of the Bumper.

Re: Looking For A Special Tool
what you need is a scale model of a fence post driver. These will drive a corner post with a square end right down into dry soil without splitting or smashing the top.

Re: Looking For A Special Tool
Ground rod attachment for Bosch Brute jackhammer(60lb yellow one that almost all rental yards have) I bought one years ago and it works alot faster than good ol sledgehammer. You can rent what you need I bought it I think it was $80. Takes about 45 seconds to drive a 3/4" x 10' ground rod into the ground as long as you dont hit any rocks or overpoured footing. Make sure you have a stable ladder with someone holding it. They make the ground rod attachment for the smaller bosch also.
