Re: Knotty Pine Ceiling

I always stagger the planks. IMHO a seam would need to be covered by a false beam or some other trim.

Make sure that the moisture content of the wood is low before installing, ceilings shrink worse than flooring and large gaps are not attractive.

Re: Knotty Pine Ceiling

Here are some pictures of one that I just finished. I too would stagger the joints. I like to stagger each row by at least two joist or more.

Re: Knotty Pine Ceiling

Guys another question, I think I should have gone to the DIY site but anyway, how and where do you nail the boards to the ceiling?

Thanks again

Re: Knotty Pine Ceiling

In the pictures that I posted I only nailed the tongue like you would nail hardwood flooring. I did face nail the butt joints though.

To do away with having to hit the joists, get a more random pattern and save material, you can go 2 ways.

On high-end work, I go to 2 routers with T&G bits. When price is an issue, I go to a couple of quickie jigs for the biscuit cutter. Both take ending on the joists out of the picture and eliminate face nailing.

Re: Knotty Pine Ceiling

I don't glue. The humidity here fluctuates too much.

Big Dave- that's beautiful, man. How did you get that color? What stain/finish did you use?

Where do you guys get your T&G from? A local lumber yard wouldn't sell me the quantity I needed for a whole room (76), because it would "wipe out their inventory"... I ended up getting them from big-box, but had to hand-weed-out all the "bananas" (twisted and/or warped planks)...what a P.I.T.A!

It was a little bit of work. First of all we decided to install the car siding on upside down so that the center grove would not be seen. It made it look too busy.

Second we went through all of the car siding and cut out all of the bad spots and cut the peices to a 16" interval.

Then we fired up the router with a chamfer bit and routed all the ends.

After that we sanded all of it to even out the color and get rid of any defects like crayon marks and foot prints and so on.

Then we stained all of it. We used a minwax stain but I can't remember the color.
EDIT: After looking back through the minwax stain colors I think it was Puritan Pine.

After it was installed, the painter sprayed on the sealer and laquer.

I get my wood from a lumber yard that specializes in log home stuff and they keep several hundred if not thousands of feet on hand at all times.

Dave.
